Investigation of Different Vitamin Specially Vit.a of Jute and Mesta Leaves.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The percentage of vitamin – A varies fromsample to sample of the different varieties of jute leaves. The percentage of Vit.A in the leaves of d 154 and CVE-3 have been found highest while CVL-1 and CC-45 contain hopeful amount of Vit.A . All samples contain more or less same amount of moisture. In case of fat contant CVE-3 has been found highest amount while CC-45 showed lowest fat content.

Objectives:

To establish jute and mesta leaves as a rich source of Vit.A ( carotene)

Methodology:

Different varieties of jute ( D – 154, CVE – 3, CVL-1 and CC-45) were grown in six experimental plots at the central station of BJRI for determining their Vit.A. Green jute leaves ( 0.5 gm) were cut into pieces and soaked in petroleum ether and acetone mixture and was smashed along with glass particles. The extract was collected several times until the samples become colourless. The collected extract was evaporated to dryness in a water bath under reduced pressure. The dried sample was extracted with a little amount of petroleum ether and then it was passed through a column of activated alumina. The alumina column was then eluted with petroleum ether at 40 – 600 C and the eluted sample was collected in a volumetric flask and volumed upto 100 ml. The optical density was measured at the range of 420 to 450 nm in a Double Beam Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer. Carotene content was expressed as u gm / 100 gm comparing the readings with the standard solution.

Samples of different varieties of jute leaves were collected and the percentage of Vit.A of these samples were determined. It is found that the leaves of D-154 and CVE – 3 contain the highest amount of Vit.A ,while the others contain hopeful amount of Vit.A. All the samples contain more or less same amount of moisture and fat with the exception of CVE – 3 which contain highest amount of fat.
