Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Standardization of nutrient solution for production of capsicum, tomato and cucumber in circulating hydroponics culture was conducted at the glass house of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during November 2010 to April 2011. Three different types of solutions EC 1.5- 2.0, 2.5-2.8, 2.5-3.0 and pH 5.5-6.0, 5.5-6.5, 6.0-6.5 were standardized for production of capsicum, tomato and cucumber in circulating hydroponics culture.

Objectives:

To produce capsicum, tomato and cucumber in circulating hydroponics culture

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the glass house of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during November 2010 to April 2011. Plants were grown on steel tray (1x3x0.25m) sizes containing nutrient solution. The trays were connected with a tank through plastic pipe. Nutrient solutions were circulated within the trays by an electric pump. Three different types of solutions EC 1.5- 2.0, 2.5-2.8, 2.5-3.0 and pH 5.5-6.0, 5.5-6.5, 6.0-6.5 were used in three different crop and different growth stages. The seed s of Tomato (BARI hybrid-5) Capsicum (BARI Capsicum -1) and cucumber (Alavi) were sown on Styrofoam. The foam were cut into 2.5 cm cube size, in the middle of the cube the seeds were sown after that foam were placed in a tray (60 x80 x25 cm) containing 30L fresh water. A news paper was placed over the Styrofoam to control the evaporation of water. After germination the newspaper was removed. At two to three true leaf stages 10 to 20 cc nutrient solutions were added at an interval of 2 to 3 days. After 3 to 4 weeks the seedlings were transplanted in according to the desired plant spacing that is for tomato (30 cmx 50 cm), capsicum were (25 cmx 30 cm) and cucumber (30 cmx 50 cm). Tomato crop was planted on November 10, 2010 and harvested on February 15, 2011. The cucumber planted on November 15, 2010 and harvested on 16 February 2011 and capsicum was planted on November 05, 2010 and harvested on April 2011.
