Investigation on the Physico-chemical Properties of Jute Fibre of Optimum Growth Age to Ascertain for Fine Spinning.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of fiber chemistry Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1999-2000 to obtain ways of fine spinning. The fibres of the olitorious variety (0-9897) of different growth ages were collected. The studies of the fibers up to 135 days age are completed except the spinning trial. However based on the data so for obtained, the harvesting of jute plat at the age of 90-105 i.e. nearer to 90 days age appears to be optimum for obtaining fibers of expected physical and chemical properties with optimum yield with merely on cutting loss of the jute fiber for fine spinning.

Objectives:

To obtain ways of fine spinning of jute fiber having improved physic o-chemical properties.

Methodology:

a) Sample Collection: The 0-9897 variety of Jute plants were cultivated in Manikganj Experimental field to produce the required fibers and accordingly fibers of ages accordingly fibers of ages 45,60,75,90,105,120 &135 days were collected. b) Plant height, plant population, economic yield etc. were recorded properly. c) Determination of chemical constituents: The chemical constituents like as ash, fat, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin of the jute fibers were determined by using standard method. d) Determination of physical properties: i. Physical properties viz. tensile strength, linear density, breaking load, elongation at break, tenacity, textile modulus, toughness etc. were determined by universal testing machine (Instron machine) from the single strand of fiber separated randomly from the reeds of the sample fibres.ii. Bundle strength, fineness, whiteness were determined by standard method. iii. Reed length, cutting loss percent and net fiber weight were determined by conventional method.

Achievement/Findings:

The yields of fibers in lower ages 45,60, 75 are minimum (7.07-42.40 %) and higher in 120 & 135 days (89.33-100%).Whereas in 90 &105 days age those are in close proximity. We prefer fibers of lower age the harvesting of 90-105 days is deemed to be appropriate. The basic important physical properties of the fibers aging 45, 62, 77, 91,104, 121 & 134 days of the same variety which were been collected earlier from the same land on cultivating completely in identical conditions. Among these properties the breaking twist and fineness parameters plays the utmost role in fine spinning. It is apparent that fibers of nearer to 90 days ages seem to be the best for fine spinning. Although the color spinning. Although the color parameter have been recorded in the study. The physical parameters are recorded. It appeared that the fiber nearer to 90 days ages are the superior. The fiber yield of age 90 & 104 days are very close to the fiber yield of age 120 or 135 days aged. The cutting loss is merely nil at this age whereas for 12o to 135 days ages are much higher (6.6.-8.2%) .
