Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to increase the system productivity and income of farmers through introduction of improved cropping pattern. Patterns BRRI dhan31- BRRI dhan28/29 -Fallow and BRRI dhan46- BRRI dhan29-Fallow with improved management (IM) and farmers management (FM) practices were evaluated at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia during 2008-09. Productivity of improved cropping patterns under irrigated ecosystem with improved management practices was increased by 23 to 29 % over farmer's management.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Patterns BRRI dhan31- BRRI dhan28/29 -Fallow and BRRI dhan46- BRRI dhan29-Fallow with improved management (IM) and farmers management (FM) practices were evaluated at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia during 2008-09. As test materials BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan46 in T.Aman season and BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 in Boro season were used in the study. The intercrop study was conducted in dispersed farmer's field. Tomato (var. BARI tomato3) was grown as intercrop with improved sugarcane variety, Amrita. Recommended management practices were adopted for this trial.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of tested patterns with improved management practices showed that improved management practices gave about 23-29% more grain yield than farmers' management practices. Pattern, BRRI dhan31-BRRI dhan29-Fallow gave the highest grain yield (11.06 t/ha) which was about 29% higher than the farmers' management practices (8.60 t/ha). Result of the study also indicated that the total productivity of a pattern could be increased by adopting improved and recommended cultural and management practices. Yield and economics performances of sole and intercrop system of sugarcane are presented that irrespective of different farmers, higher yield with higher gross margin were obtained from intercrop system compared to sole crop. About 60-75% more gross margin was obtained from intercrop system though the total variable cost increased at about 12-14%. The result of the study implies that the farmer who is economically solvent can invest more to increase productivity and income through intercrop system.
