Soil test based fertilization may be a good fertilization option. It not only promotes higher rice yields but also adjusts under- or overdoses of fertilizers in soil. It appears from the result that the intensity of yield decreased was more with N & K omission in both T. Aman and Boro season. Higher yield decrease was observed in Boro than T.Aman season due to omission of P fertilizer. The application of P, S and Zn @ 7, 3 and 5 kg/ha/crop, respectively, builds up P, S and Zn level in soil.

To monitor the changes of the soil fertility status due to fertilizer addition/omission and organic source addition.

The experiment was initiated on a permanent layout at the BRRI farm Gazipur in 1985 Boro season viewing missing element approach using 12 treatments in RCB design with 4 replications. Since Boro 2000, each plot was split to include a reverse treatment, and additional varieties, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan31 to evaluate the reverse trends of missing elements. In Boro season NPKSZn @ 120-25-35-20-5 kg/ha was used but in T.Aman season it was 100-25-35-20-5 kg/ha. After the 47 th crop, the treatments were modified with the omission of Zn fertilizer because of its sufficiency in the soil. The STB dose of NPKS was 138-10-80-5 kg ha-1 and 100-10-80-5 kg/ha-1, respectively. The rate was calculated from complete treatment soils after 47th crop using Fertilizer Guide-2005 (BARC, 2005) with a yield target of 7.5 t/ha and 6.5 t/ha, respectively. Again in Boro 2009-10, organic materials were used as third modification in T5, T8, T9 T10 and T11 treatment. Different sources of organic materials were used in selected treatment such as oil cake (OC) (2 t/ha), saw dust (SD) (3 t/ha), cow dung (CD) (3 t/ha), mixed manure (CD: PM: SD: OC= 1:1:1:0.5) and poultry manure (PM) (2 t/ha) in T10, T9, T5, T11 and T8 treatment and rest of the treatment keep as previous. Only N @ 138 kg/ha was applied as top dress in the organic source added treatment. However, during this modification both missing and reverse management plot were merged and considered as one treatment keeping the experimental inception treatment i.e. twelve treatment. Again in T. Aman 2011-12, T9 and T10 treatments were changed where two doses of potassium (60 & 40 kg/ha respectively) were used.

The omission of N and K gave significantly the lowest yield from the complete treatment. Application of cowdung @ 3 ton/ha with IPNS based chemical fertilizer produced little bit higher yield than complete treatment, but other organic treated plots did not exceed the complete treatment. Application of K @ 60kg /ha also produced little bit higher yield than complete treatment. More or less similar trend was observed in Boro 2013 season where application of cow dung @ 3 ton/ha with IPNS based chemical fertilizer gave the yield (6.11ton/ha) as same as complete treatment. The addition of different organic sources in selected treatment did not cope up to produce similar yield as complete treatment in T. Aman 2012, because of these selected treatments were deficient in some selected nutrients for longer period. The effect of different rates of K fertilizer on the grain yield of MV rice was clearly visible in Boro and T. Aman season. The application of K @ 80 kg/ha produced higher grain yield (6.11t/ha) in Boro season where in T. Aman season it was 60 kg K/ha. Soil analysis result of 2012 shows that long term effect of complete fertilizers (NPKSZn) and missing of a nutrient from complete fertilized and unfertilized situation revealed that continuous cropping without fertilizer decreased organic matter, availability of P and K compared to initial soil of the experiment with the exception of N, S and Zn. Sulfur and Zinc @3 and 5 kg/ha/crop, respectively improved the available S and Zn level in the soil. On the other hand, P @ 7 kg/ha /crop build up available P in soil, but when P was not applied, the available P level in soil decreased in the same way of unfertilized crop. In K @ 80 Kg/ha, the depletion of exchangeable K level was observed.
