Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of spinning, wet processing, Testing and Physics Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1996. Geo jute of size 145 cm X 70 cm was used as agrotextile material for the purpose of vegetative growth in different experiments. The sample was placed in the field upon which 100 gms of caddis collected from experimental mill.In some of experiments muddy soil was placed evenly in free hand. Then 5 gms of mymosa rubricanlis seeds were sown. Rate of germination of seeds, number of leaves and lengths of seedlings were recorded. Satisfactory vegetative growth of the mymosa rubricanlis was observed during the experiments in the pilot scale use of jute geotextile. Satisfactory growth of paddy seeds had been found using jute geotextile in the seed beds.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Geo jute of size 145 cm x 70 cm was used as agrotextile material for the purpose of vegetative growth in different experiments. The sample was placed in the field upon which 100 gms of caddis collected from experimental mill of BJRI was uniformly distributed. In some of experiments muddy soil was placed evenly in free hand. Then 5 gms of mymosa rubricanlis seeds were sown. Rate of germination of seeds, number of leaves and lengths of seedlings were recorded and 250 gms of paddy seeds were kept under water for 24 hours. Then these were packaged with CBC for another 24 hours. Afterwards the seeds were spread over the seed beds prepared earlier as under. Netted types of jute geotextiles of size 10 inch x 3 inch was used in order to germinate paddy seeds upon which 2 inch layer of soil was uniformly spread. In one bed 100 gms caddies was evenly placed and then again a layer of 3 inch soil was placed. Another bed was prepared without caddies but the layer of soil on jute geotextiles in this case was 4 inch instead of 2 inch as earlier one.

Achievement/Findings:

Results using jute geotextiles and caddis without soil and urea showed almost identical time for germination. No of seedlings in first, second and third day slightly differ. No. of leaves and length of seedlings are exactly similar to all these experiments. The experiments when carried out with the addition of a 2 cm layer of muddy soil on caddis showed identical time for germination. And the no. of seedlings was more than double than the previous experiment. Using urea in addition to the above materials, the germination time was more and growth was less which indicates that urea will not be necessary for the vegetative growth of mymosa rubricanlis on jute geotextiles and caddis. In the 1st experiment total no. of seedlings with only jute geotextile and caddis after 3 days were 32 but after 3 months the existing plants was half of the total. In case of the experiment using soil, the growth of the seedlings was almost double at identical time and after 3 months the loss of seedlings was much more than the earlier experiments. In spite of the loss, the leaves, lengths of the existing plants are very satisfactory.
