Maximizing the Productivity of Late T. Aman-based Cropping Patterns Through Adoption of Newly Released BRRI Dhan46

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main objective of this study was to To intensify the productivity of Boro-Fallow-Fallow cropping pattern in medium highland-2 and medium lowland. ii) To maximize the productivity of Boro-Fallow-T. Aman and Boro-T. Aus-T. Aman cropping patterns. Nine blocks/villages were selected by the joint effort of researcher and extension providers in Mymensingh Sadar and Gafargaon upazilas of Mymensingh and Kapasia upazila of Gazipur districts three from each Upazila. The selected Upazilas are Bahadurpur, Char Kharicha and Bhatidapunia in Mymensingh Sadar, Uthuri, Maizbari and Dakkinpara in Gafargaon and Bibadia, Saliatiki and Anjab in Kapasia Upazila. BRRI dhan46 was demonstrated in three cropping patterns of Boro-Fallow-Fallow, Boro-Fallow-T. Aman and Boro-T. Aus-T. Aman cropping patterns in three locations each in ten farmers plots in a village along with existing cropping patterns to show the technological advantage of cropping pattern. Results revealed that cultivation of BRRI dhan46 after Boro rice produced the grain yield of 4.58 t ha^-1 in 2008 under Boro-Fallow-late planted T. Aman cropping pattern at Kapasia which was 1.88 t ha^-1 higher than local T. Aman variety, Tilkapur. The increased yield of BRRI dhan46 increased the total grain yield of the cropping pattern of Boro- T. Aman cropping pattern that earned 28 % (about 28000 Taka ha^-1) higher gross return than the existing cropping pattern with local variety, Tilkapur in Aman season. In other sites, the productivity both of total grain yield and economic advantage could be reported after harvest of ongoing T. Aman rice, 2009.

Objectives:

To provide opportunities to the farmers and extension providers to be oriented on the production package of the improved cropping patterns.
To promote rapid scaling out of improved cropping patterns.

Methodology:

Nine blocks/villages were selected by the joint effort of researcher and extension providers in Mymensingh Sadar and Gafargaon upazilas of Mymensingh and Kapasia upazila of Gazipur districts three from each Upazila. The selected Upazilas are Bahadurpur, Char Kharicha and Bhatidapunia in Mymensingh Sadar, Uthuri, Maizbari and Dakkinpara in Gafargaon and Bibadia, Saliatiki and Anjab in Kapasia Upazila. BRRI dhan46 was demonstrated in three cropping patterns of Boro-Fallow-Fallow, Boro-Fallow-T. Aman and Boro-T. Aus-T. Aman cropping patterns in three locations each in ten farmers plots in a village along with existing cropping patterns to show the technological advantage of cropping pattern. The researcher oriented the selected farmers and concerned extension providers at block level with the technological package. The advantages of the technology was discussed to the double number of farmers through field day and farmers' motivational tour during the maturity stage of on-going T. Aman crop. The quality seeds of truthful level produced in the demonstration plots was exchanged or sold to the interested farmers for further dissemination. The behavior of the scaling out was monitored jointly by the researcher and the extension providers. As the project activities started in all sites from January 2009, the cycle of the cropping pattern is not completed. The system and location wise productivity would be captured later. However, BRRI dhan46 was demonstrated in Boro-Fallow-late planted T. Aman cropping pattern in Rayed village of Kapasia Upazila during 2008-09 from the initiative of RFSD. The management practices followed for Boro rice under different cropping patterns were monitored and recorded through the joint effort of BRRI and DAE. The rates of adoption of cropping pattern technologies are being monitored. The strength and weaknesses of the proposed uptake pathways are also being captured for improving the pathway for replicating in other areas.

The single Boro is practiced in lowland and medium lowland. In the periphery of medium lowland up to 110 cm inundation, it has been planned to grow the variety BRRI dhan46 after recession of monsoon water during Aman season with a view to intensify the land type from single Boro to double rice. Boro rice harvested and seeds were given to the farmers with these land types. Farmers are going to adopt BRRI dhan46 in the ongoing Aman season 2009. Results on system productivity (Boro-T. Aman) as a whole and adoption rate could be reported in the next years. Results revealed that cultivation of BRRI dhan46 after Boro rice produced the grain yield of 4.58 t ha^-1 in 2008 under Boro-Fallow-late planted T.
