Monitoring the Whole Farm Activities of Intervened Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to determine the changes resulted from the intervention of farming system technologies for different farm categories. Before interventions of farming systems technologies benchmark data were collected at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia during 2006. Three farm families from each of landless, marginal and small categories were selected for interventions. Then the different interventions were done on the farmers' fields and homesteads based on their resources and opportunities. With the intervention of farming systems technologies, the average annual income of landless, marginal and small group of farmers increased by 23, 36 and 41%, respectively compared to base year data at FSR&D site, Kapasia. Higher income was associated with higher rate of adoption of interventions.

Methodology:

Before interventions of farming systems technologies benchmark data were collected at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia during 2006. Three farm families from each of landless, marginal and small categories were selected for interventions. Then the different interventions were done on the farmers' fields and homesteads based on their resources and opportunities. Such interventions were: production of high value summer and winter vegetables, rearing of improved breed of layer and pigeon, rearing of goat, fish culture in perennial and seasonal ponds, production of improved papaya in the homestead, fertilization of jackfruit trees, spraying of mango, N management by LCC use etc. Then income and expenditure data of the intervened farmers were collected using a questionnaire. Finally the collected data were analyzed and compared with base year data.

Achievement/Findings:

Income and expenditure of the different categories of farmers during the intervened year of 2006-07 showed that income included the total amount consumed, distributed to the relatives and price of sale of different products whereas household expenditures included the total cost of production and the amount consumed by the family. The expenditure from crop component of all landless farmers was higher than income but income and expenditure from crop component of the marginal farmers were almost close to each other. On the other-hand, the income of small group of farmers from crop component was higher than expenditure. It has been also noted that those farmers who were intervened with vegetables gained extra income after fulfillment of their requirement. Similar trend was also observed in case of homestead agro forestry, livestock and fisheries components. The total income of all categories of farmers was markedly increased after intervention of different kinds of technologies. Except one farmer, the expenditure of all categories of farmers was also increased. The total income increased, on an average, by 33, 36 and 41%, respectively for landless, marginal and small category of farmers. On the other-hand total expenditures increased for landless, marginal and small farmers, respectively, were about 25, 23 and 34%. The higher income for small category farmers was due to higher rate of adoption interventions. Results of the study imply that bringing diversification in the existing farming systems with improved technologies may lead to increase farmers' income to a great extent.
