Farmers' Participatory Production Demonstration of Turmeric and Ginger in the Homestead

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objective of this study was to i) To create awareness among farmers in growing turmeric and ginger in unused and or shady places of the homesteads ii) To assess economics of turmeric and ginger production. The trials were conducted at FSR&D site, Moison block of Kapasia Upazila under Gazipur district during the period of April 26 to December, 2006 and May 23, 2006 to February, 2007 for turmeric and ginger, respectively. In homestead area, turmeric and ginger produced an average yield of 23 and 8 t/ha, with gross margins of Tk. 1,61735 and Tk. 1,56,534/ha, respectively.

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at FSR&D site, Moison block of Kapasia Upazila under Gazipur district during the period of April 26 to December, 2006 and May 23, 2006 to February, 2007 for turmeric and ginger, respectively. Eight farmers of different farm categories were selected for each spice. Prior to start the activities, the participatory farmers were imparted training on the production package of the spices. Both the spices were planted at a spacing of 50 x 25 cm apart using 2.5 and 2.0 tons seeds of turmeric and ginger/ha respectively. BRRI scientists provided technical assistance to the farmers and all other cultural and management practices were done by the farmers. Crops were harvested at full maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield and economics of turmeric showed that irrespective of different farm categories, turmeric produced an average yield of 101.93 kg with an average gross margin of Tk.732 from a homestead area of 45.3m². Yield performance and economics of ginger showed that ginger gave an average yield 13.83 kg with an average gross margin of Tk.260 from 16.66m² area.
