Study the Physical Properties of the Novotex Fabrics (drape).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during the year 1990 at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Dhaka, Weaving Department to study the physical properties of the Novotex fabrics. Drape property of the fabric is an important factor for the consumers. The Drape property of the Novotx fabric, 100% cotton fabric, 100% hessian fabric and union fabric were studied and found that drape property of the Novotex fabric is within the acceptable limit.

Objectives:

To produce better quality of the Novotex fabrics for the diversified use.

Methodology:

Three types of fabrics were produced for this experiment. Such as Novocel (100%jute) Novotex Union and Cotton (100%cotton yarn) fabrics and the weave design was plain using simple shuttle loom having 120 P.P.M i.To produce Novocel fabric 3 lbs/spy i.e.103 tex of jute yarn was used both warp and weft direction. ii. To produce Novotex fabric 2ply of 20 count cotton yarn was used for warp and 3 lbs/spy in 103 tex of jute yarn as weft. iii. To produce 100% cotton fabric 2ply of 20 count yarn was used both for warp and weft. The jute yarn was spun in the spinning department. Cotton yarn was collected from the BTMC and the fabric was weaved. Finally chemical modification i.e. woollenisation, scouring, bleaching and other chemical treatments were done in the Pilot Plant and Processing. The test specimens were cut randomly throughout the fabric of ten meter length. The diameter of the sample was 12” and was placed on a circular support of appreciably smaller diameter (5”dia). A Drape meter was used to measure the projecting image on a plane surface. The area of the shadow cast by the freely hanging portion of the cloth was measured. Then the drape co-efficient was measured.

Achievement/Findings:

It was seen that the drape co-efficient of these fabrics have decreased gradually due to chemical treatment.The results suggest that wet chemical treatment of fabrics has a much better effect on draping qualities.The draping qualities of jute cloth that have not been treated in any way are much less than these of treated fabrics. The drape co-efficient percentage of 100% jute hessian cloth is 97.89%. But after subsequent chemicals treatment i.e. scouring, bleaching, woolanization and softening, the drape co-efficient percentage has reduced to 6.47. In case of 100% cotton cloth it is seen that the initial drape co-efficient percentage was 70.16%. But after subsequent chemical treatment, it reduced to 50.55%. Similarly in case of union fabric, the initial drape co-efficient percentage was 82.48%. But after chemical treatment is become 59.13%. From the above results graphical representation, it seen that drape co-efficient percentage is gradually reduced.In comparison with the cotton or union fabric, jute fabrics was always regarded as harsh for furnishing fabrics. Wet treatment do not reduce this intrinsic stiffness/harsh property but causes relaxation of the fabrics which causes the fabric drape freely. The best drafting properties are achieved by prolonged high temperature were treatments but fabric of traditional construction still remain out side the range of good drafting properties.
