Screening of Tossa Jute Germplasm for Water-logging Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with 50 C. olitorius germ plasm along with four germ plasm of previous year`s findings (1225, 1267, 1376 and 1377) and the varieties O-9897 and O-72 as control in concrete tanks at the Green House premises of BJRI. Each accession and control variety were sown in 30 cm earthen pots in triplicate. Five plants were raised in each pot following BJRI recommended standard procedure. The date of sowing was 23 April 2007. At the age of 60 days after sowing, two sets of plants (2 pots) were submerged in water in the concrete tank. An artificial waterlogged condition was created with increasing water height gradually in the tank. The average plant height and base diameter of the accessions ranged from 80.07-195.87 cm and 5.56-1389 mm respectively.Results showed that unfortunately no plants survived after 30 days of water-logging stress although the plants, survived in the previous year.

Methodology:

For waterlogged condition, about 2/3rd of the plant height was submerged for 30 days, the water in the tank was allowed to recede using centrifugal pump with minimum disturbance to the adventitious roots. The adventitious roots were scored as 0 to 5. The mortality rate of the plants was recorded after 15 days from the date of water receding.
