Effect of Dead Jute Seed on Germination and Growth of Jute Plant in 2007.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The total number of doses of dead seed was 6 ( 0 (T₁), 0.5(T₂), 1.0(T₃), 1.5(T₄), 2.0(T₅) and 2.5 (T₆) ton/ha). The varieties used in the experiment were O-72 (V₁) and BJC-83 (V₂). The earthen pots were filled with 15 kg of air-dry soil and dead jute seed were mixed with the soil evenly according to treatment. Then 50 viable seeds were sown in each pot as per design. The result showed that, there was no effect of dead seed on germination of both the varieties in al the treatments. All most all the seeds germinated within 72 hours after sowing. But growth data varieties up to 90 and 120 days of growth. From the experimental evidence, dead jute seed might be used as a source of plant nutrients. But use pattern of dead jute seed as plant nutrients, an experiment should be designed and performed with the collaboration of soil science department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of dead seed on germination.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of dead jute seed on germination of jute seed in soil system and the possible use of dead seed as source of nutrient to jute plants in the Greenhouse of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute. The total number of doses of dead seed was 6 ( 0 (T1), 0.5(T2), 1.0(T3), 1.5(T4), 2.0(T5) and 2.5 (T6) ton/ha). The varieties used in the experiment were O-72 (V1) and BJC-83 (V2). The total number of treatments was 12. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four replications. The total number of pots was 48. The earthen pots were filled with 15 kg of air-dry soil and dead jute seed were mixed with the soil evenly according to treatment. The soil was then wetted in field capacity with distilled water for three days. Then 50 viable seeds were sown in each pot as per design. All other cultural practices have been performed as per BJRI procedure. Germination and growth data has been recorded consequently.
