Studies on Softening of Jute Cuttings by Conventional and Chemical Mean.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pectin is the material which cements together the tissues surrounding the fiber strands of the jute plant. The removal of this pectin by microbial action in normal retting breaks down the tissues in which the fibre strands are embedded and makes possible the separation of the fiber by the well known process of stripping and washing . In chemical retting, the pectin has to be removed in the form of soluble salts, preferably by double decomposition. It is postulated that salts of sodium, potassium or ammonium of any acid ( organic or in organic) whose calcium and magnesium salts are both insoluble, would be good retting agents. Conforming to the above hypothesis, our experiments showed that Na2SO3 , Na and NH4 oxalate were good retting agents since both calcium and magnesium sulphites as well as oxalates were insoluble and other agents were poor ratters.

Objectives:

To reduce the manufacturing cost of jute products by making use of jute cuttings and auxiliary material.

Methodology:

The hard jute cuttings of C. capsularis were collected from M/S Karim Jute Mills at Demra, Dhaka. Alkalis like NaOH, KOH and salt like Na2CO3, NaCl , Na2SO3 , NH4-oxalate, Na-oxalate, NH4- phosphate werre used. Solution of the chemicals were prepared separately in cold distilled water, varying the concentrations from 0.1 to 5.0% for each chemical. Jute cutting samples were soaked in the respective solution in the ratio of 1: 15 ( w/v) i.e. 100gm in 500 ml kept in pyrex conical flask. The contents were digested at normal boiling temperature and refluxed without losing the liquor. The treated cuttings were then washed with water several times and then dried in air. The effective separation of the intrinsic fibres was judged by the ease with which the fibers could be separated from adhering tissues after the chemical treatment. The change of color of the fiber due to chemical softening was evaluated from the visual observation. The bundle strength of fiber was measured by pressley strength tester under standard condition of the testing department of BJRI.

Achievement/Findings:

Hard jute cuttings were disgested in solutions of different alkalis and salts of varying concentrations at the boiling temperature for an hour. It was found that ammonium oxalate and sodium oxalate solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.0% gave satisfactory results with respect to softening activity for jute cuttings in addition to significant improvement in color and bundle strength of the fiber.
