Evaluation of T. Aus Varieties Collected from Farmers Fields Through DAE.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur.The major objective of this study was to know the characteristics of the varieties popularly grown by the farmers in T. Aus season. Collected 89 seed samples of 20 major T. Aus growing upazilas were grown at BRRI Farm. The analysis of the collected 89 seed samples showed that the farmers were cultivating 39 BRRI varieties including BR11.

Objectives:

To generate knowledge for breeding rice in T. Aus season.
To fine proper germplasm for the improvement of T. Aus season.

Methodology:

Collected 89 seed samples of 20 major T. Aus growing upazilas were grown at BRRI Farm, Looking at the sample designation with BR, BRRI seed stock of these varieties were included in this trail. Seeding and transplanting were done on 21 April and 20 May 2004 respectively.Twenty-five day old seedling were transplanted @ 2-3 seedling in 5.4m x 4 rows non-replicated plots with the spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizers at the rates of 60:40:40:10 kg NPKS/ha with all amounts of P,K & S were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in 2 equal splits at 10 and 30 days after transplanting. Data on days to maturity; plant height (cm), phenotypic acceptability,lodging tolerance,field reactions to diseases,grain yield (t/ha) and grain characteristics were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The seed samples of same variety from different farmers had a wide range of variations in terms of admixtures, sterility, and moisture content and germination percentage. Importantly, name of a variety was same but different morphological features. This was because of using admixture seeds year after year. Moreover, yield of BRRI varieties showed higher yield potentials than the yield potentials of the seeds obtained from the farmers field. In general, the local cultivars showed lower yield potentials, lodging tolerance and diseases and insects infestation, but higher pre-harvest grain sprouting tolerance. The eight seed samples were collected as BR1 (Chandina) from the farmers field of eight upazilas of Narshingdi, Netrokona, Dinajpur and Maulavibazar districts. Out of eight samples, only plant grown from two samples showed similarity with the plants grown from check BR1 seeds. These two samples were collected from Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur district and Srimongal upazila of Moulavibazar district. The plants grown from remaining six samples varied distinctly from the plants grown from check variety in respect of plant height, days to maturity, grain yield and grain characters. However, they showed modern plant stature and higher yield potentials. These six genotypes might be the advance lines of some rice improvement programs or exotic varieties. Similarly, plant grown from six samples collected as BR2 (Mala), four sample each of BR14 (Gazi), BR19 (Mongol), BR21 (Niamat) and BRRI dhan27 exhibited district dissimilarity with respective check varieties. In some areas, farmers grew some varieties (e.g. BR19, BR21, BR25 & BRRI dhan28) in T. Aus season. However, BRRI recommended those varieties for Boro and Aman seasons. This might be a cause for grain sterility and eventually lower the yield.
