Improvement of Light Fast Dyeing of Jute with Basic Dyes (cationic Dyes).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Pilot Plant and Processing department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1989. Scoured and bleached CBC was padded with basic dyes, Astrazon Blue B, Astrazon Brilliant Red 4G, 200% Rhoamine B, Remacryl green 3 B, Remacryl Blue BRL and Remacryl orange RRL. It was then padded again with sodium molybdate together with dihydrogen phosphate and was dried and treated with hydrochloric acid. Dyeing was also carried out using the same dyestuffs by applying conventional exhaust dyeing method for comparison. Satisfactory light fastness with good penetration and bright shade was achieved by the developed method.

Objectives:

To study the fastness properties of jute fabric by using basic dyes and to improve the dyeing method.

Methodology:

CBC was scoured and bleached conventionally and was cut into pieces for carrying out this work using six varieties of basic dyes.

Exhasut dyeing method : Required amount of dyestuff was pasted with acetic acid dissolved by pouring hot water. The bath was set with previously dissolved dye and 3% acetic acid (30%) giving liquor ratio 1:20. The fabric was entered at 50⁰C and the temperature was raised to 90⁰C. Dyeing was conducted for 1 hour at that temperature. The fabric was then rinsed and dried.

Developed method (pad-dry):

The experiments was done by the following recipe using the following sequences: (i)5 g/l basic dye, (ii)30 g/l sodium molybdate (iii)15 g/l sodium dihydrogen phosphate

Sequences: i) Padded with predissolved dye (pick up 100%) ii) Padded with aqueous solution containing sodium molybdate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate. III) Dried at 100⁰C for 1 minute. iv) treated with hydrochloric acid (10g/l) at 40-45⁰C for 15 minutes. v) Rinsed, soaped, finally rinsed and dried.

The fastness to light of the dyeing was determined.

Achievement/Findings:

Light fastness of the dyeings in all dyes applying special technique improved to a great extent, rating from 4-5, whereas it was very poor in conventional method. The effective means of this improving light fastness is, of course, due either to a chemical change in the dye molecules or to their coalescence into large aggregates with the inorganic reagent. In this method reaction took place between dye, sodium molybdate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate and a lake of an insoluble basic dye complex was formed in the fiber. This lack has got good photo stable effect on jute due to the resultant increase in partial size. On the other sense it would seen that light fastness is improved due to the blockage of substrate pores and screening effect on the fabric by this process. As the pores of the substrate become more nearly filled with dye light, air and moisture are less able to reach the dye. As a results this method also produced deep and bright shade using only 5g/l basic dye. Good levelness and penetration were also achieved. The dyeing properties are found to be satisfactory.
