Chemical and Bio-chemical Studies on Different Tropical Fibres in Relation to Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted at Biochemistry Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1991-92 to study the percent composition of fat, lignin, hemicelluloses content of the fibre.Determination of fat, lignin and hemicelluloses content of the eight wild jute samples and two samples of C.Capsularies and C.Olitorius were also done. No appreciable variation in the percentages of lignin, fat and hemicelluloses were observed among the above eight wild jute fibers. Only the sample No.6 THAI/YA/045co contains a higher percentage of hemicellulose than the other seven samples. It was also observed that in comparison with control fiber(C.Capsularies and C.Olitorius) wild jute samples contain high percentages of lignin and low percentages of fat and hemicelluloses with the exception of THAI/YA/045co which contains high percentage of hemicellulose content.

Objectives:

To study the percent composition of fat, lignin, hemicelluloses of cellulose content of the fibre.

Methodology:

Thirty different wild jute samples were received from Gene Bank of BJRI to study the percent composition of fat, lignin, hemicelluloses of cellulose content of the fibre. During this period percent composition of fat, lignin and hemicelluloses content of eight different samples were estimated. The percent composition of fat, lignin hemicelluloses and cellulose content of two samples of C.Capsularies and C.Olitorius were also done as control. In addition to this cutting, grinding and defatting of the rest of the wild jute samples are going on. Extraction of fat was carried out by refluxing the ground samples with petroleum ether (60 to 80 degree Centigrade). Lignin content of these samples was determined by the modified method of Norman and Janking and Hemicellulose were isolated by treating the samples with 9.3% sodium hydroxide solution.

Achievement/Findings:

It is observed that the percentages of lignin, fat and hemicelluloses were found more or less nearer among the eight wild jute fibers with the exception of THAI/YA/045co which contains a higher percentage of hemicellulose than the other samples. It is also observed that wild jute fibers contain very high percentages of lignin and appreciably low percentages of hemicelluloses than the control jute fibers of C.Capsularies and C.Olitorius.
