On-station and On-farm Trial with Promising Winter Avrdc Lines of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results revealed that all the studied characters except number of branches per plant had significant differences among all entries. Reproductive efficiency had no relation with fruit yield. The line CLN3125L had the longest maturity period with highest number of fruits per plant and thus gave the highest fruit yield (85.3 t ha-1) considering over locations. CLN3024A also followed the same trend (81.8 t ha^-1) in different multi-location trials over the country. The higher fruit yield in these two genotypes was due to production of higher number of fruits having the larger fruit size in general. However, BARItomato-14 had also the larger fruit shape of 105 g average weight having lower number of fruits per plant. Mean performance of yield attributes and yield considering all locations during last two years, the lines CLN3125L (85.3 t ha^-1) and CLN3024A (81.8 t ha^-1) produced the higher yield in a consistent manner at different zonal trials over the country.

Objectives:

To assess the yield potential at different locations over the country.

Methodology:

Four genotypes (CLN3125L, CLN3024A, CLN2413R and ATOM030) along with two check varieties (Binatomato-4 and BARItomato-14) were put in on-station and on-farm trials at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. Unit plot size was 12 m^₂ (4 m X 3 m) with 50 cm spacing between two rows and plant to plant as well. Recommended management practices were followed for on-station trials while farmers’ practices with recommended doses of fertilizers, one or no irrigation with poor cultural managements were followed for farmers’ field trials. Data were taken for plant height, primary and secondary branches per plant, fruits per plant and average fruit weight from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. Time to maturity was taken when 80% fruits were matured and turned into reddish color in each plot. Fruit yield of each plot was recorded till last harvest and sum up cumulatively proper weighted and converted into tons/ha. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed and the mean values of each concerned character were compared to make a conclusion.
