Effect of Zinc Fertilization on the Growth and Yield of Garlic (allium Sativum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS),Bangladesh Agricultural Research Instute (BARI), Jamalpur during rabi season of 2006-07 to find out an optimum dose of zinc for yield maximization of garlic cv. Jamalpur local. There were four levels of zinc viz.. 0, 1 2 and 3 kg ha^-1. There was also a control treatment in the study. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The fertilizer package N₁₅₀P₆₀K₁₂₀S₄₅B₁kg ha^-1 was applied to each plot as blanket dose. Results revealed that most of the growth parameters and yield components responded significantly to added fertilizers. The maximum bulb yield (7.18 t ha^-1) was obtained from 4 kg Zn ha^-1 and the minimum (3.56 t ha^-1) was recorded in the control treatment. Addition of Zn along with the blanket dose produced 18.1% higher yield over Zn control plot and 54.4% higher over control treatment. The optimum and economic doses of Zn for garlic were 4.09 g and 4.06 kg ha^-1, respectively.

Objectives:

To find out an optimum dose of zinc for yield maximization of gatlic in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain soil of Jamalpur region.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), BARI, Jamalpur during the rabi season of 2006-07. The objective of the study was to find out an optimum dose of zinc for garlic production. The soil of the experimental field was silt loam in texture belonging to Sonatola soil series under the AEZ 9: Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (FAO, 1971). The experimental site was located on the sub-tropical climatic zone, which is characterized by heavy rainfall, high humidity, high temperature and relatively long days during kharif season and scantly rainfall, low humidity, low temperature and short days during rabi season. Organic matter content of the soil was low. The soil was acidic in nature. Total N and exchangeable K status of the soil were also low. The available phosphorus, sulphur, boron and zinc were either at par or below the critical level . Four levels of zinc viz. 0, 2, 4 and 6 kg ha^-1were used in the experiment. The fertilizer package N₁₅₀P₆₀K₁₂₀S₄₅B₁kg ha^-1 was applied to each plot as blanket dose. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.0 m x 1.5 m. Garlic cloves were planted on first week of November 2006 at spacing of 15 cm and 10 cm. The crop was harvested on 28 March 2007 when the plants attained maturity and showing drying up of most of the leaves and bending over. Harvesting was done with the help of “Nirani”. Care was taken to avoid any kind of bulb injury during lifting. Intercultural operations were done as and whenever required. Data on plant growth, yield parameters and bulb yield were taken, and analyzed using MS STAT programme. The DMRT test was used for mean separations of the studied parameters.

Achievement/Findings:

The optimum and economic doses of Zn for garlic were 4.09 g and 4.06 kg ha^-1, respectively. Garlic responded significantly to zinc fertilization. The highest bulb yield was obtained with 4 kg Zn ha^-1 along with the blanket dose of N₁₅₀P₆₀K₁₂₀S₄₅B₁kg ha^-1.
