Preliminary Yield Trial of Cherry Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It revealed that 4TOM021 and BARItomato-11 had the similar plant height. Juliet1437 took higher days to maturity compared to others. The line Juliet 1437 and the check variety BARItomato-11 had the capacity to produce similar fruit yield in all locations. The highest number (343/plant) of fruits per plant was found in ATOM021, which was followed by BARItomato-11 (337/plant). The line 4TOM021 gave consistently higher fruit yield in all locations. Mean performance of fruit yield revealed that ATOM021 produced the highest fruit yield of 82.9 tha-1 followed by Juliet 1437 (73.9 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To assess their yield performance and reaction to major diseases and insect-pest.

Methodology:

Three cherry type tomato lines along with a cherry tomato variety BARItomato-11 were put into trial in order. The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Twenty eight days old seedlings were transplanted into main field. The area of unit plot size was 20 m² (5 m x 4 m). Spacing for both row to row and plant to plant within the rows was 50 cm. Recommended production packages such as application of manures and fertilizers, weeding, mulching, irrigation, application of fungicide and insecticide and bamboo sticking at vegetative stage etc. were followed as and when necessary to ensure normal plant growth and development in field condition. However, the experiment was conducted following two management practices (research management and farmers’ management). Data on plant height, days to 90% fruit ripening, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight from 10 randomly selected plants were recorded at vegetative, reproductive and ripening stages. Fruit yield of each plot was recorded for each harvest (up to last harvest) in Kg and converted into tha-1. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed for comparison of means of lines and check for each character over all the locations.

This cherry type tomato genotype gave better performance and it has a good taste to eat and it can be used as the restaurant and it has also the export quality.
