The experiment includes four Photo-insensitive hyacinth bean genotypes viz. SB002, SB003, SB008 and SB010 with a view to characterize and observe pod growth behavior at different days from anthesis to maturity and their seed production potentiality. An increasing trend showed for pod growth parameters like pod length, pod breadth, individual pod weight, pod weight without seed and green seed weight at the 9th day after anthesis to 15th day after anthesis of the pod maturity. Seed yield and yield attributes greatly varied among the genotypes. All the genotypes required almost 47 days to first flower. Days to first harvest of dried pod for seed collection ranged from 116 days to 125 days among the genotypes. The maximum number of dried pods per plant was harvested from the genotype SB003 (173.0) followed by SB008 (169.66 day). Number of seeds per pod among the genotypes varied from 3.49 to 4.16. The genotype SB008 produced the highest seed yield per plant and per hectare (600.0 g and 4.0 t/ha, respectively) followed by SB003 (536.66 g and 3.57 t/ha, respectively). The highest 100-seed weight was recorded from the genotype SB008 (47.33 g) while it was the lowest for SB010 (38.83 g).

The present experiment was undertaken to assess the pod growth behavior at different days of their maturity from anthesis and their seed production potentiality among the collected genotypes.

The experiment was carried out during the period from September 2012 to February 2013 at the experimental field of Horticulture Department, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet. The materials of the experiment included four hyacinth bean genotypes viz. SB002, SB003, SB008 and SB010. The seeds of these genotypes were collected from the Department of Horticulture, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 1.5 m x 6.0 m accommodating single row per bed and six seedlings per bed. Each plot was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 10 t ha-1 during the final land preparation. Plants were spaced at 1.0 m in a bed and 2.0 m between two adjacent beds. Distances of 50 cm in the form of drain between the block and between the beds within a block were maintained. Pits of 50 cm × 50 cm × 50 cm were prepared two weeks before transplanting of the seedlings. The soil of the pits were mixed with full dose of TSP @ 150 kg ha-1 and half dose of MoP @ 150 kg ha-1 one week before transplanting of seedlings. Pits were prepared in such a way that the pit top remained at least 10 cm above the ground level to facilitate drainage (Rashid, 1999). The remaining MP and urea were applied in three equal installments as top dressing at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT). Two seeds of each genotype were sown in a poly bag on September 22, 2012. Each poly bag was filled-up with sandy loam soil mixed with well decomposed cowdung at 50:50 ratio. Watering was done just after sowing of seed in poly bags for proper germination of seeds. Ten-day old seedlings were transplanted on October 03, 2012 in the pits with the entire soil ball. Out of two seedlings per pit, one was removed 2 weeks after transplanting. Each plant was given bamboo sticks as supporting material to climb on it. Weeding was done manually using niri whenever it was felt necessary to keep the plots free from weeds and the plots were mulched to pulverize the soil. The plants were initially irrigated by watering can and later on surface irrigation was given whenever required. Data on pod growth characteristics were collected properly. For this purpose 50 flowers of each variety were tagged at the time of anthesis. Ten pods of each variety were harvested at 9th, 12th and 15th days after anthesis to estimate the averages of pod length, pod breadth and pod weight. Mean, range and standard deviation were calculated of these data for interpretation of the results. Data related to seed yield and yield attributes were also recorded and analyzed following the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique. Mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using a computer based MSTATC program.

All the pod growth parameters indicates an increasing trend up to 15th day after anthesis. Therefore, for better understanding it is also required to estimate all the parameters beyond the 15th day after anthesis. Again seed yield potentiality of the genotypes SB003 and SB008 was also higher under winter condition. Therefore, the two genotypes SB003 and SB008 may be recommended to be tested their performance under regional yield trial.
