Effect of Number of Tiller Seedlings Per Hill on Six Hybrid Rice Lines in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from January to June 2008 to investigate the effect of number of tiller seedlings hill^-1 on the performance of some hybrid boro rice lines. The experiment consisted of six hybrid lines viz., ACI 6, ACI 7, ACI 8, ACI 9, ACI 10 and ACI 11 and three number of tiller seedlings viz., 1, 2 and 3 tiller seedlings hill^-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m² (2.0 m x 2.5 m) and the space between blocks and between plots were 1.0 m and 0.75 m, respectively. Seed yield and straw yield were found highest in ACI 9. The highest seed yield was produced when 2 to 3 tiller hill^-1 was planted. Hybrid rice line, ACI 9 transplanted with 3 tiller seedling hill^-1 gave the highest yield. Therefore, transplanting of 3 tiller hill^-1 of hybrid rice line ACI 9 could give highest yield in boro season.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of number of tiller seedlings hill^-1 on the performance of some hybrid boro rice lines

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the boro season (November-May) of 2008. The experimental site belongs to the Sonatola soil series of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ-9) having non-calcareous dark grey flood plain soil with pH value of around 6.5. The experimental field was a medium highland with sandy loam texture. Six hybrid lines viz., ACI 6, ACI 7, ACI 8, ACI 9, ACI 10 and ACI 11 were used in the trial. All the lines were collected from Advanced Chemical Industry (ACI) company and are produced by Winal Hi-tech company of China. Three tiller seedling number viz 1, 2, and 3 seedling were used as treatment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 5m² (2.5m x 2.0m). Forty-day old seedlings were transplanted in the field. The experimental plots were fertilized with NPKSZn @ 150-120-150-80 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively. All fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. Urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 7 DAT and at 21 DAT. For tiller plantation, forty five-day old tillers were separated manually from previously grown mother plants and were transplanted in the main field according to experimental treatment (1 tiller, 2 tiller and 3 tiller hill^-1) with the spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm. Two weeding were done at 7 and 21 DAT and three irrigations were given at 7, 21 and 36 DAT. The land was dried before 15 days of harvesting. Maturity of crops was determined when 90% of the grain became golden yellow in color. Five hills were selected randomly from each unit plot and uprooted before harvesting for recording the data. The recorded data were statistically analyzed using the analysis of variance technique and the differences among treatment means were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) following Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings of the study it is clear that some of the hybrid rice lines emerged as a very promising ones of which ACI 9 may be worth mentioning. This line gave significantly the highest yield when it was transplanted with 3 tiller seedlings hill^-1. For this quality the line deserves to be recommended as a hybrid boro rice variety. However for releasing as a variety further actions are necessary to meet the requirements of the National Seed Board.
