Maximizing Yield of Rice in Transplant Aman and Boro Seasons Through Adoption of System of Rice Intensification.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four experiments two in Boro 2006 season and two in T. Aman 2006 season were conducted in at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in order to find out the ways and means of maximizing the yield of transplant Aman and Boro rice through adoption of SRI method. In Bore season rice cultivar was BRRI dhan29. In experiment 1, two water management viz. (i) SRI water management and (ii) BRRI water management; and five fertilizer management practices viz. (i) BRRI fertilizer management (120-60-40-10-5 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S, Zn ha^-1 respectively), (ii) Cow dung @ 10 t/ha, (iii) Poultry manaure @ 5 t ha^-1, (iv) 50% of BRRI recommended fertilizer + 50% of the cow dung (v) 50% BRRI recommended fertilizer + 50% of the poultry manaure were included. In experiment 2, four time of storing seedlings after uprooting viz. (i) 30 minutes (SRI management), (ii) two hours, (iii) four hours and (iv) eight hours and five fertilizer management practices as mentioned in experiment 1 were included.

Objectives:

To find out the ways and means of maximizing the yield of transplant Aman and Boro rice.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications. In T. Aman season, rice cultivar was BRRI dhan29. In experiment 3, two methods of root placement viz. (i) J-shaped root placement and (ii) L-shaped root placement; Four spacings of transplanting viz. (i) 20 cm × 20 cm, (ii) 30 cm × 30 cm, (iii) 40 cm × 40 cm and (iv) 50 cm × 50 cm; and three levels of manures and fertilizers were viz. (i) fertilizer (N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S, Zn @ 80-60-40-10 and 5 kg ha^-1 respectively, (ii) Manure (poultry manure @ 5 t ha^-1) and (iii) 50% of the fertilizer + 50% of the poultry manaure. In Boro season, SRI water management produced higher grain and straw yields than that of BRRI water management. Number of total tillers hill^-1, bearing tillers hill^-1, spikelets panicle^-1 and sterial spikelets panicle^-1 showed the similar trend as that of grain and straw yields. BRRI recommended fertilizer management produced the highest grain yield (8.07 t ha^-1) and the second highest grain yields was obtained in 50% of the BRRI recommended fertilizer + 50% of the poultry manaure (7.35 t ha^-1). The lowest grain yield (4.28 t ha^-1) was obtained in cow dung at 10 t ha^-1. In terms of interaction, SRI water management in combination with BRRI fertilizer management produced the highest grain yield (8.07 t ha^-1) and the second highest grain yields was obtained in BRRI water management × BRRI fertilizer management and in SRI water management × 50% BRRI fertilizer management + 50% of the poultry manaure. The lowest grain yield (4.0 t ha^-1) was found in BRRI water management × cow dung at 10 t ha^-1.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study was conducted that the time of storing seedlings viz. 30 minutes, 2hours, 4 hours and 8 hours did not affect the grain and straw yields of Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan29) significantly. BRRI recommended fertilizer management produced the highest grain yield (8.21 t ha^-1) followed by 50% of the BRRI fertilizer + 50% of the poultry manaure (7.35 t ha^-1). The lowest grain yield (4.86 t ha^-1) was obtained in cow dung at 10 t ha^-1. Grain and straw yields were not significantly affected by the interaction between time of storing seedlings and water management.
