The study was conducted at Rangpur and Jessore districts to see the adoption, profitability, input use and production constraints of BARI potato for comparing with on-farm demonstration trials and farmers field results. The gross returns of different BARI potato varieties namely; Diamand, Cardinal and Seedling tuber were higher in on-farm demonstration trials than that of farmers field. The highest profitable variety was seedling tuber i.e. if they produce potato from Seeding tuber followed by Dianand and Cardinal in the farmers field. Again, variety Dianand was popular in southern part and along with Diamand, the variety Cardinal was also popular in northern part of Bangladesh. However, of the total potato area on an average about 79 percent area was covered by variety Diamand for both the districts. The farmers of BARI potato adopter facing several problems like non availability of latest disease free variety of potato seed in time, good quality fertilizer and insecticide High price of input was recorded as one of the major problem to the potato farmers.

  Potato

i. To assess the adoption of improved BARI potato varieties in the farmers fields; ii. To estimate the yield gap of BARI potato between farmers field and on-farm demonstration iii. To ascertain the comparative economic performance of BARI released potato varieties under on-farm trials and farmers condition and iv. To identify the socio-economic constraints of adopt BARI potato at farmers level.

The study was conducted in five villages namely Arajiman Khamer, Mohindra, Bijoynagar under Jessore district. BARI potato varieties Diamand , Cardinal and seedling tuber (potato production from seeding Tuber) was covered by the under survey. A total of 132 adopter farmers were selected randomly for primary data collection of which 80 from Rangpur and 52 from Jessore district. Data were collected through pre-designed pre-tested interview schedule by direct questioning to the selected farmers. Out of which 52 selected farmers at Jessore, only 2 farmers were cultivating potato by using seeding tuber technology, were also included under survey. Stratified random sampling was applied for data collection. To fulfill the objectives of the study collected data were analyzed according to the respective variety. The on-farm demonstration of BARI potato data were supplied from RARS (Regional Agricultural Research Station) Jessore and Rangpur. The respective scientist from RARS was given demonstration trials on farmer’s field in Bagherpara (FSR site) of Jessore and SSRP of on-farm division in Rangpur district. The price of inputs was considered from local farmer’s price. For analysis, cost and returns estimating budgeting techniques were used and different statistical tool like ANOVA production function analysis applied for input use efficiency.

According to potato scientist, about 70% potato area is covered by BARI potato and out of BARI potato about 95% area is covered by variety Diamand in Munshigonj district where the potato research center is established. In district Rangpur, about 59 percent of total cultivated area covered by potato during winter season. The variety Diamand (BARI potato-7) and Cardinal (BARI potato-8) occupied 71 and 29 percent respectively. Again in Jessore, about 37 percent of cultivated area was covered by potato during winter season. Out of the total potato area, the variety Diamand covered 87 percent followed by Cardinal (12%) and Seeding tuber (1%). Per hectare yield gap between farm condition and on-farm demonstration of BARI potato shows that about 33 percent for diamond and 8 percent for cardinal variety yield/ha were higher in on-farm demonstration trials. In Rangpur districts, highest gross return Tk 102514/ha was obtained from variety Diamond than Cardinal (Tk 9820/ha). The higher gross return was also obtained (Tk 90508/ha) from variety Diamand than variety Cardinal (Tk 80796/ha). The average gross return was found from BARI potato was Tk 110408/ha including potato prodcution from seeding tuber. Where the highest gross return (Tk 180022/ha) was obtained from seeding tuber. The higher cost per hectare was obtained from variety Diamand (Tk 53486) than Cardinal (Tk 51602) in Jessore compare to variety Diamond (Tk 50818) and Cardinal (Tk 50238) in Rangpur district. But the cost per hectare of potato production from seeding tuber was Tk 38466/ha in Jessore district. The benefit cost ratio (B/C ratio) of variety Diamand (Tk 1.69) and Cardinal (Tk 1.56) was lower in Jessore than Rangpur district where than benefit cost ratio was Tk.2.02 and 1.95 for variety Diamand and Cardinal. The co-efficient of manure, human labour and power used were found positively significant in the model.
