Adoption Status and Economics of Sesame Cultivation in a Selected Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Khulna district during 2003-2004 to measure the socio-economic impact and adoption of BARI developed sesame variety. Sesame cultivation is very much popular in the study area. The farmers are getting income Tk 7130.82 and Tk 11294.94 as total cost basis and cash cost basis respectively. The benefit cost ratios are 1.97 and 4.52. The yield is 964.29 kg per hectare which is very lower than that of national average of 1.5 tones per hectare. The farmers are facing various problems to cultivate local variety. Sesame cultivation can be done much profitable by spreading modern variety and modern package of technology.

Objectives:

i. To assess the status of improved technology adopted by the farmers. ii. To examine the extent of adoption of BARI variety iii. To examine the increase in income of the farmers and iv. To identify the potentials and constraints to sesame production.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Khulna district where sesame is being cultivated as a major crop. For selecting farmers, purposive sampling technique was followed. A total of 40 farmers were interviewed for collecting data. Data were collected through pre-designed per-tested interview schedule during the period of 2003-2004. In most cases, tabular method of analysis was used to achieve the objectives of the study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed and presented by using tables.

Achievement/Findings:

The farmers got production 964.29kg per hectare. They also got Tk 456.33 income by selling the by-product of sesame. The income for sesame cultivation is 14496.39 Tk/ha. The average yield was found 964.29 kg per hectare in Khulna which is very lower than that of national average of 1.5 tones per hectare. The farmer got average return Tk 14496.39 per hectare. The average gross margins on total cost basis and cash cost basis were Tk 7130.82/ha and Tk 11294.92/ha respectively. Benefit cost ratios were found as 1.97 and 4.52 considering total and cash cost basis respectively. The average return to labour was estimated as Tk 180 and Tk 240 per day on total and cash cost basis respectively, which is much higher than per day wage rate, prevails in the study area. The farmers cultivated the local varieties. They think that local variety is more suitable for cultivation and they are not in need of modern input. The farmers mentioned some disadvantages of sesame cultivation. These were damage of crop due to have rain, low productivity, grain quality is low etc. The farmers gave some comments about the cultivation of modern variety. They showed their negative attitudes to cultivate modern variety because. Lack of high quality seed, high cost of cultivation, lack of capital etc. were the main constraints for non adoption of modern variety.
