The present study was undertaken to assess the current usage of pesticide and fertilizer in vegetable production with their impact on cost and return. The study was conducted in four different areas of Jeesore and Bogra districts containing 100 samples farmers. This study is a part of research project funded by DFID and this is a partial report prepared for this year. The study also will cover two more areas Comilla and Norshingdi with 100 more sample farmers. The findings of the study indicate that the cost of insecticide application in vegetable cultivation is higher in Jessore district than that in Bogra. Regarding cost of insecticide the results show that pesticide cost constituted 31.6% of the total cost of Brinjal cultivaiton in Jessore compared to 21.58% of that in Bogra. For bean cultivation pesticide cost registered higher in Jessore (32% of the total cost) than in Bogra. The findings also imply that higher insecticide cost for vegetable cultivaiton reduces the BCR of the farmers. Apparently it seems that gross benefit of Jessore farmers are higher than that in Bogra but in respect of benefit cost ratio the farmers in Bogra enjoyed more benefit than that in Jessore.

i. To determine the level, cause and factors of the overuse of pesticides and inorganic fertilizer application; ii. To observe the type, timing, frequency of pesticides and fertilizer application; iii. To estimate the relationship between pesticides and fertilizer use and vegetable production; iv. To know the impact of using pesticides and fertilizer and v. To evaluated the introduced IPM strategies by the project in Bangladesh

To determine the present socio-economic aspects of the vegetable growers, four intensive vegetables growing areas were selected throughout the country. The regions are Jessore (Western region). Norsingdi (Central region), Bogra (Northern region) and Comilla (Eastern region). In the year I, the baseline survey of Jessore and Bogra have been completed and Norsingdi and Comilla is on-going. So, in this report the results of Jessore and Bogra have been accomplished. Jessore is situated in the north-west part and Bogra is located in the northern part of Bangladesh. Four locations from two villages of Jessore and four locations from two villages of Bogra were selected purposively. The selected villages were Gaidghat & Shahbajpur in Jessore and joshopara & Khidwradhama in Bogra. From each location 50 sample farmers were selected and interviewed according to a pre-fixed questionnaire by the research personnel. The survey was done during May-November, 2003.

The major croping pattern in Jessore was observed as Bean-Boro Rice followed by Brinjal –Boro Rice and Winter vegetable (tomato, potato, cole crops )-cucurbit-eggplant is very popular cropping pattern in Bogra. In both the location eggplant shoot and fruit borer was detected as the major insect pests of eggplant followed by epilachna beetle, whitefly, jassid and mite. In bean, maximum farmers reported that pod borer, Maruca vitrata is major problem followed aphids and pod borer (helicoverpa sp.) and mite. Most of the farmers (95%) rely only on insecticide for the control of insect pests at Jessore while the farmers of Bogra are applying insecticides along with hand picking of egg masses, damaged fruit and shoots etc. Insecticide application frequency differs depending on location and crop. Spray frequency at Jessore always higher than that of Bogra irrespective of crop. Highest number of insecticides were applied on eggplant at Jessore, 82% of the farmer apply insecticides more than 100 times during 5-6 months cropping period. 70.5% do not take any measure. Only 4% covers their face with cloth during application. In addition to covering face, nearly 11.5% cover their head and wear shirt at the time of insecticide application. Only 1.5% farmer’s use glasses to protect their eyes. The farmers of Bogra used more protective measures than that of Jessore. The pesticide cost accounted for about 32% in eggplant, 32% in bean and 20% in cucurbit production in Jessore. Apparently it seems that gross return from eggplant, bean and cucurbits were higher in Jessore than that in Bogra, but if we observe the BCR then it is clear that real benefit from these crops are higher in Bogra.
