Performance of Tomato as First and Mungbean as Second Intercrop with Transplanted Sugarcane in Paired Row

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

No significant effect of intercropping on millable cane and pol % cane was found but significant effect was found in tiller, cane yield first intercrop and 2nd intercrop yield in this experiment. From the results it was found that total adjusted cane yields of sugarcane and intercropping packages were higher compared to sole sugarcane. Among the treatment combinations where tomato was grown remarkable difference was found in relation to total adjusted cane yield. The highest total adjusted cane yield (216.85 t ha-1) was achieved in T4 {PRC + tomato (3 lines)-MB} followed by T3 {PRC + tomato (2 lines)-MB} (201.35 t ha-1) and the lowest was found from T1 (PRC only). The overall results revealed that combination PRC + tomato (3 lines) followed by mungbean as second intercrop in paired row planting system is profitable and may be recommended for large scale adoption in farmers field.

Objectives:

i) To observed the suitability of tomato as 1st intercrop with paired row sugarcane ii) To find out the effect of plant population of tomato as intercrop with paired row transplanted sugarcane on economic benefit per unit area and time. iii) To popularise tomato as intercrop in paired row sugarcane.

Methodology:

Sugarcane was grown in paired rows at 140cm-60cm x 30 cm spacing and intercrops was grown in vacant spaces between two paired rows of sugarcane. The brief statements on methodology is given below: First Intercrops : Tomato (var. Lalima) Second Intercrop : Mungbean (BINA mung-5) Total treatments : 8, Plot size: 8m x 8m, Replication: 4, Design: RCB Treatments : T1 : Paired row cane (PRC) only T2 : PRC + potato – mungbean T3 : PRC + tomato (1 line) – mungbean T4 : PRC + tomato (2 line) – mungbean T5 : PRC + tomato (3 line) – mungbean T6 : Sole tomato T7 : Sole potato T8 : Sole mungbean Method of sugarcane planting : STP (Bag settling) Cane variety : Isd 32 Gross Area : 0.16 ha
