Identification of T. Aus Breeding Materials for Pre-harvest Sprouting.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Objective of this study was to maintain genetic purity for pre-harvest sprouting. Eighteen advanced breeding and four BR varieties including BR26 as susceptible check and BRRI dhan29 as resistant check were grown. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted with 2-3 seedlings/hill in 2 x 2 m plot. The percent pre-harvest sprouting was higher when panicles were submerged at 44 DAF than DAF irrespective of the varieties.

Objectives:

To maintain genetic purity for pre-harvest sprouting.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Eighteen advanced breeding and four BR varieties including BR26 as susceptible check and BRRI dhan29 as resistant check were grown. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted with 2-3 seedlings/hill in 2 x 2 m plot. RCB design was followed with three replications. Recommended cultural practices were followed. Three plants were selected at PI stage for each treatment and replication. Flowering date of theses selected plants was noted carefully. Selected plants were bent with care to immerse the panicles in to standing water for 24 hours at 23 and 44 days after flowering. Then the panicles were wrapped with a piece of wet cloth bag with both ends tied and enclosed in polyethylene bags to prevent drying up. The plants with the wrapped panicles were erect by tying them to sticks.

Achievement/Findings:

The percent pre-harvest sprouting was higher when panicles were submerged at 44 DAF than DAF irrespective of the varieties. Among the tested varieties/lines only two lines and BR1 performed well at 23 DAF but no tested varieties/lines were found at 44 DAF.
