Evaluation of Crop Management Options for Narrowing the Yield Gap in Boro and T Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a yield gap experiment at Kapasia in Boro season, BRRI recommended management + LCC and BRRI recommended management + USG practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 39 and 29% higher than the farmers management practices, respectively. The yield advantage of 21% could be attained by recommended management practice while this was 20, 21 and 24% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds, USG and LCC were used with farmers’ management practice. In T. Aman season, BRRI recommended management and recommended management + USG practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 55 and 48% higher than the farmers’ practice, respectively. The yield advantage of about 42% could be attained by using recommended management + LCC practice while this was 21, 33 and 23% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds, USG and LCC were used with farmers’ management practice.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of different crop production factors in narrowing the yield gap at farm level.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Technology Site, Kapasia with the following treatments. Treatments: Crop management factors 1. Farmers Practice (FP) 2. FP + Quality Seed (QS) 3. FP + LCC based N 4. FP + USG 5. Recommended crop management 6. Recommended crop management + USG 7. Recommended management + LCC based N Variety: BRRI dha46 and BRRI dhan29. Design: RCB Replication: Six dispersed farmers' field (each farmer's field was considered as one replication) Data collected: i) Yield and yield components ii) Cost of production (labour and other input) iii) Farm gate price of paddy and straw iv) Farmer's reaction.

The results of Boro season showed that yield and yield contributing characters were significantly affected by different management options. BRRI recommended management + LCC and BRRI recommended management + USG practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 39 and 29% higher than the farmers management practices (5.26/ha), respectively. The results of the study also implies that yield advantage of 21% could be attained by recommended management practice while this was 20, 21 and 24% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds, USG and LCC were used with farmers’ management practice. In T Aman season, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly affected by different management options. BRRI recommended management and recommended management + USG practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 55 and 48% higher than the farmers’ practice (3.25 t/ha), respectively. The result of the study revealed that yield advantage of about 42% could be attained by using recommended management + LCC practice while this was 21, 33 and 23% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds, USG and LCC were used with farmers’ management practice.
