Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202.

Mimosa invisa is a newly introduced species in Bangladesh and may be one of the promising green manuring crops. Because it grows very profusely and produces more biomass. It adds organic matter to the soil, improves soil properties as well as prevents soil erosion and weed growth. But in Bangladesh, study of Mimosa invisa as green manure is lacking and it has not yet been explored for such practices. It needs through study. Therefore, an experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from July to December 2005 to study the effects of Mimosa invisa green manure in vitro on the growth, yield and yield components of transplant aman rice (Oryza sativa L.). Seven levels of Mimosa invisa green manure application i. e., control (recommended NPK dose), 15 t ha-1 as basal 15 t ha-1 as split (early tillering stage of rice), 20 t ha-1 as basal, 20 t ha-1 as split, 25 t ha-1 as basal, 25 t ha-1 as split and two varieties of rice BRRI dhan41 and Naizersail were included in the study. Mimosa invisa was chopped into pieces before applying in the plots. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Sixty day old Mimosa was used for incorporation into the soil as green manure.

To study the effects of Mimosa invisa green manure in vitro on the growth, yield and yield components of transplant aman rice.

The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Sixty day old Mimosa was used for incorporation into the soil as green manure. Green manuring with different amounts of Mimosa invisa biomass significantly influenced the growth parameters such as plant height, number of tillers and number of leaves hill-1 at different dates after transplating. The effects green manuring was found significant on all the yield and yield contributing characters except plant height and 1000 grain weight. The highest number of effective tillers hill-1 number of grains panicle-1, grain and straw yields were obtained with 25 t ha green manure when applied as split and it was identically followed by the treatment NPK at recommended dose. The lowest number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 and grain yield obtained with 15 t ha-1 green manure application. Naizersail produced higher plant height and atraw yield whereas BRRI dhan41 produced higher number of effective tillers hill-1 number of grains panicle-1, 1000 grain weight and grain yield. The interaction of green manure and variety exerted a significant influence on yield and yield contributing characters. BRRI dhan41 applied with NPK at recommended dose gave highest yield and yield contributing characters. The second highest values of yield and yield contributing characters were found for the same variety with 25 t ha-1 green manure applied as split. The lowest number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 and grain yield and harvest index were obtained from the variety Naizersail with 15 t ha-1 green manure as basal application.

Mimosa invisa can be grown manuring crop. In vitro practice is better as it grows well in high land. It contains N 2.48%, P 0.1%, K 2.0% and S 0.08%. Mimosa invisa @ 10 t ha-1 × 75% recommended dose of nitrogen produced identical grain yield with that of recommended dose of N. Two equal split application of Mimosa invisa i. e. 50% at basal and 50% at early tillering stages showed better performance in respect of grain yield than the basal application. The highest number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 and grain and straw yields were obtained with 15 t ha-1 Mimosa invisa when applied as split. Thus the study confirms that Mimosa invisa could be grown as green manuring crop. It should be applied at the rate of 25 t ha-1 in two equal splits at 50% as basal and 50% at early tillering stage for HYV transplant aman rice. However, 25% N should be applied in the form of urea for better microbial activities of soil and uptake of organic N. But for LIV like Naizersail the dose of green manuring should be 15 t ha-1. Result of the study reveals that soil nutrient status viz. N, P, K, S and organic matter was slightly increased due to incorporation of Mimosa invisa as green manure.
