Crop Residue and Weed Management of Permanent Raised Beds in Rice-wheat Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI to compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds and to compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method. Five crop establishment options viz., permanent beds with 100%, 50% crop residue retention and without retention, semi-permanent beds (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz. hand weeding and herbicide + hand weeding are being evaluating in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS rice cropping pattern. Crop establishment by bed planting increased grain yields of wheat and mungbean over conventional (flat) planting in Wheat-Mungbean-Rice cropping system.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur during Rabi 2006-07. Five crop establishment options viz., permanent beds with 100%, 50% crop residue retention and without retention, semi-permanent beds (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz. hand weeding and herbicide + hand weeding are being evaluating in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS rice cropping pattern. For the treatments with bed, 70 cm (40 cm top and 30 cm furrow) wide beds with 15 cm height were made. For the treatments with herbicide, non-selective herbicide Gramoxon was used at the transition period between mungbean and rice and no herbicide was used at the transition period between wheat and mungbean as mungbean was sown immediately after harvesting of wheat. The first crop of the cropping pattern, wheat, was grown without imposing any treatments except the tillage options bed and flat. Wheat was sown on 30 November 2006 and harvested on 30 March 2007. After harvesting of wheat, mungbean was sown on 4 April 2007 and harvested on 10 to 15 June 2007 and that was followed by DS rice. DS rice was delayed due to unusual heavy rainfall. Recommended management practices were followed for wheat, mungbean and rice cultivation.

Achievement/Findings:

The grain yield of wheat on bed was significantly higher than conventional method. Similarly, grain yield of mungbean on permanent bed was significantly higher than conventional method. Among the permanent beds, the treatments where crop residue of wheat retained produced higher mungbean yield though they are statistically identical.
