Identification of T. Aus Breeding Materials for High Temperature Tolerance.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Objective of this study was to evaluate breeding materials for low spike lets sterility at high temperature. Thirty-day-old seedlings of thirteen parent materials were transplanted in pots in 3 sets following CRD with three replications. The result showed that out of 18 advanced lines, two breeding lines, BR6898-166-20-7 and BR6982-65-11 were found tolerant to high temperature at reduction division stage and heading stage.

Objectives:

To evaluate breeding materials for low spikelets sterility at high temperature.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Thirty-day-old seedlings of thirteen parent materials were transplanted in pots in 3 sets following CRD with three replications. First set was received high temperature treatment at reduction division stage, The 2nd set was received high temperature at heading stages and third set was used as control where plants were grown in normal weather condition. High temperature means the temperature is 35⁰C or above. Literature's say that different problems including high percentage of spikelet sterility occur if temperatures exceed 35⁰ C. The temperature of the whole experimental period was near about the 35⁰ C and ranging from 31 to 43 ⁰C. But temperature at the experimental time was quite fluctuating due to rain which was a big problem for conducting the experiment. So, the experiment should conduct at mid February to first week of March then it is possible to induce high temperature at the first week of May when the temperature will be high and constant.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest filled grain was found in control treatment among the 3 treatment which is followed by the first set where high temperature induced at reduction division stage. The lowest filled grain was found second set where high temperature induced at heading stage irrespective of the varieties. among the variety, the highest filled grain was found in BR6898-166-20-7 and BR6982-65-11, irrespective of the three treatments. Among the treatments, maximum varieties/lines were produced higher unfilled grain in set 2 where high temperature induced at heading stage. Irrespective of the treatments, the lowest unfilled grain was found in BR6982-65-11. Among the tested lines and irrespective of the treatments, the lowest percent sterility was found in BR6898-166-20-7 and BR6982-65-11 which was more or less similar to the check variety, IR50 and BR. Out of 18 advanced lines, two breeding lines, BR6898-166-20-7 and BR6982-65-11 were found tolerant to high temperature at reduction division stage and heading stage.
