Objective of this study was to find out the optimum seedling number and spacing of 1st transplanted rice for producing higher number of tillers for double transplanting in Aman and Boro rice. The experiment was conducted at West-byde of BRRI experimental farm during 2006 Aman and 2006-07 Boro. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. Four seedling number per hill: 3 (N1), 6 (N2), 9 (N3) and 12 (N4) and three spacings: 10cm x 10cm (S1), 15cm x 10cm (S2), 15cm x 15cm (S3) were evaluated in this experiment. In T. Aman season, 30 days retention of 1st planted crop at a spacing of 15 x 10 cm apart with six seedlings per hill produced higher number of tillers while in Boro season 45 days retention of 1st planted crop using nine seedlings per hill with the same spacing is optimum for producing higher number of tillers.

To find out the optimum seedling number and spacing of 1st transplanted rice for producing higher number of tillers for double transplanting in Aman and Boro rice.

Tiller counting was initiated at 10 and 25 days after transplanting (DAT) in Aman and Boro season, respectively with an interval of 10 days from five randomly selected hills of each treatment and counted up to flowering. Transplanting was done on July 27 and January 11 with 30 and 44 days old seedlings of BRRI dhan44 (Aman) and BRRI dhan29 (Boro), respectively. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied at the rate of 100-10-40-8-0 kg/ha for BRRI dhan44 and 140-15-40-10-5 kg/ha for BRRI dhan29. In Aman season, N was top dressed at 10, 25 & 45 DAT while in Boro season it was done at 15, 30, 50 DAT.

Tillers counted at 30 and 40 DAT were significantly affected by the interaction of seedling number per hill and spacing while the single effects of seedling number and spacing were significant for other dates of counting in T. Aman rice. At 30 and 40 DAT, 12 seedlings per hill at 15cm x 10cm spacing gave significantly the highest number of tillers followed by six and nine seedlings per hill with the same spacing. For DT Aman, the duration of 1st planted crop is considered about 30 days. The highest tiller number per hill was found at 30 and 40 DAT. Irrespective of different spacings, 12 seedlings per hill gave significantly higher number of tiller per hill at 10, 20, 50, 60, 70 and 80 DAT. At 25, 35 and 45 DAT, 12 seedling number per hill gave significantly the higher of tiller number per hill for different spacing and at 45 DAT significantly higher tillers per hill were observed with nine seedling number per hill with 15cm x 10cm spacing which was statistically identical to 12 seedling numbers per hill with the same spacing. At 25 DAT tiller number per hill was decreased. Tiller numbers were found to increase with the age of crop up to 45 DAT. Seedlings number per hill and spacing affected the tiller number for different date beyond 45 DAT. Seedling number nine and six per hill showed comparable tiller number per hill at the same DAT. Irrespective of different seedling number per hill, crop planted at wider spacing (15 cm x 15 cm) gave significantly higher number of tiller per hill at 55, 65, 75, 85 and 95 DAT followed by 15 cm x 10 cm and 10 cm x 10 cm planting spacing. For double transplanting Boro, crop duration at 1st transplanting was considered almost 45 days.
