Irrespective of different spacing and tiller number, BRRI dhan29 gave significantly higher grain yield (5.1 t/ha) than BRRI dhan28 (3.94 t/ha). Six tillers per hill produced significantly higher grain yield (4.68 t/ha) which was comparable to 9 seedling number per hill and 3 tiller number per hill produced the lowest grain yield of 4.35 t/ha. The higher grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m2 and filled grains per panicle. More number of tillers per hill enhanced the crop maturity by 4-5 days than less number of tillers per hill.

To compare the performance of Boro rice varieties under double transplanting with tiller number and spacing.

The experiment was conducted at West-byde of BRRI experimental farm during Boro 2006-07. The design of the experiment was split-split plot with three replications where two Boro varieties: BRRI dhan28 (V1) & BRRI dhan29 (V2) were in the main plots, two spacing: 20cm x 15cm (S1) & 25cm x 15cm (S2) were in sub-plots and tiller number 3 (N1), 6 (N2) and 9 (N3) planted/ hill at 2nd planting were placed in sub-sub plots. First transplanting was done at a spacing of 15 cm x 10 cm using 10-12 seedlings per hill on January 18 and 23, 2007 with 43 & 36 days old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28, respectively. Previous crops T.Aman and Potato were planted on July 31st, 2006 and December 03, 2006 and harvested on November 19, 2006 and March 01, 2007, respectively. Second (Double) transplanting was done on March 06 and 05 with tillers separated from 1st transplanted field of 47 and 40 days old crops for BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28, respectively using desired number of tillers and spacing specified for different treatments. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn was applied at the recommended rate for 1st TP and 50% of the recommended rate for 2nd TP. For 1st TP, N top dress was done at 15, 30, 45 (BRRI dhan28) & 15, 30, 55 (BRRI dhan29) DAT. For 2nd TP, 25% N used as basal and rest 25% top dressed at 15 & 20 DAT for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29.

The interaction effect of this study was insignificant. But effects of variety and tiller number planted per hill were significant for grain yield and spacing did not influence grain yield. Irrespective of different spacing and tiller number, BRRI dhan29 gave significantly higher grain yield (5.1 t/ha) than BRRI dhan28 (3.94 t/ha). All other yield contributing characters were statistically insignificant. Spacing had no significant effect in yield and yield contributing characters. Irrespective of variety and spacing grain yield, panicles/m2 and the number of grains per panicle were significantly affected by tiller number per hill. Six tillers per hill produced significantly higher grain yield (4.68 t/ha) which was comparable to 9 seedling number per hill and 3 tiller number per hill produced the lowest grain yield of 4.35 t/ha. The higher grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m2 and filled grains per panicle. More number of tillers per hill enhanced the crop maturity by 4-5 days than less number of tillers per hill.
