Evaluation of Transplanting with Three Spacing and Drum Seeding of Boro Rice Under Different Planting Time

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

There was no significant yield difference between wet seeding (5.29-5.51 t/ha) and transplanting (5.54-5.87 t/ha) when flowering was synchronized by adjusting wet seeding and transplanting times. December 10 seeding and corresponding 15 days earlier seedbed sowing for transplanting gave significantly higher grain yield (5.99 t/ha) than January 10 seeding and corresponding transplanting (5.22 t/ha).

Objectives:

To increase panicle number in transplanting through closer spacing and compare its performance with drum seeding.

Methodology:

Transplanting with three spacing 20 cm x 20 cm, 20 cm x 15 cm and 15 cm x 15 cm were compared with drum seeding and broadcasting under two sowing/planting times. Two sowing dates for drum-seeding and broadcasting were 10 December, 06 and 10 January, 07 while corresponding seedbed sowing for transplanting was done 15 days before to synchronize flowering time with drum seeding and broadcasting. Forty day old seedlings were transplanted on 5 January, 07 and 5 February, 07. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with two factors. In total 2 x 5 = 10 treatment combinations were randomly distributed in three replications.

Achievement/Findings:

The results reveal that difference in grain yield was insignificant due to establishment method irrespective of planting time. Similar result was also observed in last year. The grain yield ranged from 5.29 t/ha in broadcasting to 5.87 t/ha in transplanting with 15 cm x 15 cm spacing. Significantly highest straw yield of 6.51 t/ha and panicle of 385 /m 2 was found in broadcasting and lowest in transplanting with 20 cm x 20 cm spacing. Among the three spacing of transplanting, closer spacing of 15 cm x 15 cm significantly increased the panicle/m 2 than 15 cm x 20 cm and 20 cm x 20 cm spacing. Transplanting at 15 cm x 15 cm spacing produced 370 panicles/m² which was equivalent to those produced with drum-seeding (356 panicles/m²) and broadcasting (385 panicles/m²). But the increased panicles/m² could not significantly increase the grain yield. The effect of establishment method on plant height was insignificant. Planting time, irrespective of establishment method, significantly affected the grain yield of Boro rice. Higher grain yield was obtained at 10 December seeding and corresponding transplanting than 10 January seeding and corresponding transplanting. The results of two years indicated that though yield of Boro rice was increased by early sowing and transplanting, the establishment method had no significant effect on it.
