On-station Yield Trial with Advanced Sesame Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Significant variations for most of the characters among the mutants and check varieties in both individual locations and combined over locations. On an average, number of branches/plant ranged from 1.8 in SM-058 to 3.3 in Binatil-2. Mutant SM-10-04 produced significantly higher number of capsules/plant and seeds/capsule in both locations. The significantly higher number of capsules as well as higher number of seeds/capsule in SM-10-04 resulted in significantly higher seed yield than both check varieties in both locations and combined over locations.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of three advanced mutants lines as compared to two check varieties in respect of maturity period, seed yield and yield contributing characters at two different locations of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Three advanced mutants and two check varieties (Binatil-2 and BARI Til-2) were evaluated. The mutants and check varieties were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 20 m² (4 m × 5 m) keeping 25 cm spacing between rows and 6-8 cm among the plants in a row. Seeds were sown within 6-12 March 2013. Recommended production packages like application of recommended doses of fertilizers, weeding, thinning, irrigation, application of pesticide etc. were followed to ensure normal plant growth and development. Data were taken for plant height, branches/plant, capsules/plant and seeds/capsule from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Maturity period was counted when 80% capsules were matured and most of the plants turned into straw or yellowish color in each plot. Seed yield of each plot was recorded after harvest and converted into kg/ha. Appropriate statistical analysis were performed for comparison of means of each character. Mean differences of different parameters were tested by Duncan`s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984)

Achievement/Findings:

Among three lines and check varieties, SM-10-04 was produced the highest number of capsule (57) plant^-1, seeds (67) capsule^-1, highest seed yield (1418 kg ha^-1) along with higher 1000-seed weight. Because of the higher number of capsule per plant, higher number of seed per capsule and higher seed yield potential SM-10-04 was the best performer than the other lines and the check varieties regarding seed yield and yield contributing characters. Application was made to National Seed Board (NSB) for registration of SM-10-04 and consequently, NSB registered SM-10-04 as Binatil-3 in 2013.
