Multi-location Yield Trial with Promising Soybean Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Significant variations were observed for most of the characters in all the locations and combined over locations. On an average, days to maturity ranged from 103 in Binasoybean-2 to 112 in the mutants SBM-18 and SBM-22. Shortest plant height (35 cm) was recorded in Binasoybean-2. Branches/plant ranged from 1.6 in Binasoybean-2 to 2.5 in SBM-9. On an average, among the mutants and check varieties, SBM-18 and SBM-22 produced significantly higher number of pods/plant (41 and 39, respectively) and seed yield (2642 and 2606 kg/ha, respectively) than both check varieties. Seeds/pod ranged from 1.9 in SMB-9 to 2.5 in Binasoybean-2. Hundred seed weight in the mutants ranged from 1.9 to 2.3.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of Four promising soybean mutants along with two check varieties in respect of maturity period, seed yield and yield contributing characters.

Methodology:

Four promising soybean mutants along with two check varieties (Binasoybean-2 and BARI Soybean-5) of soybean were evaluated through this trial. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of BINA Hqs. farm, Mymensingh and BINA sub-station farms at Rangpur and Magura during January to April 2013. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Sowing was done within first week of January 2013. Spacing between rows was 30 cm and 7-10 cm between plants in a row. Unit plot size was 12 m² (4 m x 3 m). Recommended management were followed to ensure proper growth and development of plants. Data on various characters such as plant height, number of branches/plant, pods/plant and seeds/pod was taken from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Maturity period was counted when the plants and pods of each plot turned into yellowish brown color and almost all the leaves shed. Seed yield of each plot was recorded and converted into kg/ha. Data recorded from the experiment were analyzed following appropriate statistical design. Mean differences of different parameters were tested by Duncan`s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Among the mutants and check varieties, SBM-18 and SBM-22 produced significantly higher number of pods/plant (41 and 39, respectively) and seed yield (2642 and 2606 kg/ha, respectively) than both checks. Because of their higher number of branches and pods per plant, higher number of seed per pod and higher seed yield potential both lines SBM-18 and SBM-22 can be selected for further trials at research field to be registered as varieties.
