On-station Yield Trials with Advanced (b. Napus) Rapeseed M8 Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Significant differences among the mutants and check for all the individual location and combined over locations. On an average, maturity period of the mutant varied from 87-90 days while Binasarisha-4 and Tory-7 required 95 and 86 days, respectively. Binasarisha-4 produced the tallest plant height (109 cm), while the mutants MM-51, MM-63 and MM-64 had the shortest plant height of 97, 97 and 98 cm, respectively. The average number of branches/plant ranged from 2.9 in Binasharisha-4 to 3.8 in Tori-7. The number of seeds/siliqua ranged from 18.7 in Tori-7 to 30.0 in MM-63. On an average, all the mutants had significantly higher seed yield than the check Tori-7. Among the mutants, MM-51 produced higher seed yield (1667 kg/ha) followed by MM-64 (1644 kg/ha). Among the four locations, Magura showed slightly better performance in respect of seed yield (1822 kg/ha).

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of four M8 rapeseed mutants along with mother check variety Binasarisha-4 and also Tori-7 in respect of maturity period, seed yield and yield contributing characters at four different locations of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Four M8 rapeseed mutants along with mother check variety Binasarisha-4 and also Tori-7 were evaluated through the trial. The trial was conducted at the farms of BINA Hqs. Mymensingh and BINA sub-stations at Rangpur, Ishurdi and Magura. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Seeds were sown within 1st week of November 2012. Unit plot size was 16 m² (4 m × 4 m) with 25 cm row to row spacing and 6-8 cm from plant to plant within rows. Recommended production packages i.e., application of fertilizers, weeding, thinning, irrigation, application of pesticide etc. were followed to ensure normal plant growth and development. Data on plant height, branches/plant, siliqua/plant and seeds/siliqua were taken from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Maturity period was counted when 70% siliqua were matured. Seed yield of each plot was recorded after harvest and converted into kg/ha. Appropriate statistical analysis were performed for comparison of means of each character. Mean differences of different parameters were tested by Duncan`s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Among the mutants and check varieties, MM-51 and MM-64 produced significantly higher number of siliqua/plant (106 and 100, respectively) and seed yield (1667 and 1644 kg/ha, respectively) than both checks. Because of their higher number of branches and siliqua per plant, higher number of seed per siliqua and higher seed yield potential both lines MM-51 and MM-64 can be selected for further trials at research field to be registered as varieties.
