Optimize the Insertion of Twists for Blended Jute Yarns.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted at Spinning Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1991-92 to fix up suitable balanced twists for blended yarn. The study was conducted aiming at optimizing level of twist of jute polyester (90:10) blended yarns of nominal count 258 tex (7.5 lbs/spy).In order to do so, seven different counts twist in the range of 124.8 tpm (3.17 TPI) to 221.75 tpm (5.63 TPI) were inserted in the yarns. From the quality ratio and CV % of tensile strength values of the yarns the optimum level of twist seems to lie within the range 170 tpm to 180 tpm.

Objectives:

To fix up suitable balanced twists for blended yarn of jute with other textile fibers.

Methodology:

BWB jute fiber and staple polyester fiber were taken as raw materials for the experiment. Jute fiber was piled for 48 hours with 30% normal emulsion for maturation. The polyester fiber was opened up as much as possible by hand teasing thus made ready for achieving proper blends. Blending was carried out on breaker card machine by feeding jute fiber on the breaker card lattice and spreading the teased out polyester fiber over the matured jute reeds fed on the lattice in the 90:10 proportion. The delivered silvers were then processed through normal jute processing system and finally yarn of 285 tex (7.5 lbs/spy) nominal count were spun from 90:10 jute-polyester blend composition in the conventional hessian spinning frame. In the spinning frame, keeping draft for the required count 258 tex (7.5 lbs/spy) fixed, seven different yarns were processed by inserting seven different twist in the range of 3.17 TPI to 5.63 TPI.

The Spirality given to a yarn in order to hold the constituent fibers on yarns together is called twist. Twist also imparts strength to the yarn up to a certain point. Yarn is called twist. Twist also imparts strength to the yarn up to a certain point. Yarn strength increases with the increase of twist but above that point additional twist adds strains to the fibres thereby reducing yarn strength. Moreover, different amount of twist are required for yarns of different end-use purposes. Therefore twist in processing yarns always plays an important role. This project, aims at finding out the optimum level of twist for jute/polyester (90:10) blended yarns of 258 tex (75 lbs/spy) nominal count. Yarns of 258 tex (7.5 lbs/py) wee spun for the experiment having different twist levels ranging from 221.75 tpm to 125 tpm (5.63 TPI to 3.17 TPI). From the table it is apparent that insertion of twist in the level of 172.66 & 176.33 tpm gave better result of the blended yarns in terms of quality ratio and CV% of the tensile strength. Therefore, it is obvious that the optimum level of twist would lie somewhere within 170 to 180 tpm. To locate the exact point of optimum twist more study is required.
