Develop Wet Processing Technology of Jute Materials Using Different Types of Textile Machinery.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A few numbers of continuous/semi continuous dyeing methods such as pad-dry, pad-batch, pad(alkali)-pad(dye)-batch, pad(dye)-pad(silicate)-dry and pad-dry-thermofix methods were carried out for dyeing of jute fabrics using six varieties of reactive M-dyes in padding mangle, followed by drying and curing/fixing in stenter machine. The results of dye fixation as well as washing fastness achieved by pad-dry, pad(dye)-pad(silicate) and pad-dry-thermofix method using procion Orange M-2R, Procion Red M 8 B, Basilen yellow M 4 GD were found to be promising. In the same condition Procion Navy, Procion Turquoise MXC and Procion green M 2B in all dyeing methods attained very small fixation which are undesirable. Washing and rubbing fastness were found to be satisfactory figuring from 3-4 to 5. The light fastness was found moderate to good. Pad-dry, pad(dye)-pad(silicate) and pad-dry-thermofix methods using reactive M dyes such as procion Orange MX2R, Procion Red MX8B, Basilen yellow M 4 GD are suitable for dyeing of jute fabrics.

Objectives:

To develop the suitable wet processing technology for jute materials.

Methodology:

Carpet Backing Cloth(CBC) was scoured, bleached in jigger machine and dyeing was carried out with varieties of Reactive M-dyes viz. Procion Orange MX2(ICI) . Procion Red M8B, Basilen yellow M 4 GD(BASF), Procion Navy, Procion Turquoise MXC and Procion green M2B by applying the following methods using padding mangle and stenter machine. (i) Pad-dry method: This is very simple and fully continuous method. Bleached CBC was first padded with a solution, containing dye (20g/l ) and sodium bicarbonate, dried in stenter and then washed off. (ii) Pad-batch method: This is a semi-continuous method. The bleached CBC was padded in dye solution together with a penetrating agent/wetting agent (lissapol-N) and sodium bicarbonate giving wet pick up 100. The sample was batched in a roll, covered it with polythene sheets and was stored for up to 24 hours, after which it was washed off and dried. (iii) Pad(Alkali)-dry-pad(dye)-batch method:The cloth was padded with alkali solution (Sodium carbonate-15g/l) and then dried after which it was impregnated with dye solution(padding), then batched, stored for 24 hours , then washed off. (iv) Pad(dye)-pad(meta silicate)-dry method: CBC was padded with dye solution, again padded with sodium meta silicate (10g/l) together with common salt, then dried and washed off. (v) Pad-dry-thermofix method: This is fully continuous method. The fabrics was first padded with dye and alkali solution in addition with 150g/l urea it was dried and then thermofixin stenter machine at 120-130 degree centigrade for 1 minute. After dyeing by using above methods dye fixation in CBC was determined and also the fastness properties were determined.

Achievement/Findings:

Five dyeing methods such as pad-dry, pad-batch, pad(alkali)-pad(dye)-batch, pad(dye)-pad(silicate)-dry and pad-dry-thermofix methods were carried out using six varieties of reactive-M dyes, Amongest these methods pad-dry, pad(dye)-pad(silicate)-dry and pad-dry-thermofix methods achieved satisfactory dye fixation attaining above 56-82% with procion orange MX, Procion Red M 8B, Basilen yellow M 4 GD. As the methods are continuous, they may be used for commercial production of dyeing of jute fabrics in a large scale. The method save energy and time, increase in productivity and reduce the processing cost.
