Assessment of the Qualities of Yarns of Different Counts to Standardize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted in Testing & Standardization Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 1995. Studies were made on the physical properties of the yarn samples collected from Karim and Bawany Jute Mills Ltd., Demra, Dhaka as per standard test methods in the standard atmosphere.Yarns of 207 tex, 276 tex and 345 tex were heavier and that of 414 tex was lighter than their nominal counts. But all the yarns collected from Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd.were found lighter than their nominal counts. The twist factor (TF) of 345 tex and 414 tex yarns of both the mills were more than the standard twist factor of their respective counts.it was observed that the breaking load and the quality ratios of 207 tex and 414 tex yarns of Karim Jute Mills Ltd. And 345 tex and 414 tex yarns of Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd. were better than those of the yarns of other counts. It was also observed that the quality ratios of yarns of Karim Jute Mills Ltd. were comparatively better than those of the yarns of Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd.

Objectives:

To improve and standardize of yarns of different counts.

Methodology:

In the first phase of the work four yarn samples of 207, 276, 345 and 414 tex were collected from Karim Jute Mills Ltd., Demra, Dhaka and Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd., Demra, Dhaka, The yarn characteristic properties, such as count, twist per meter (TPM), twist factor (TF), breaking load, extension percentage at break, quality ratio (QR), etc. were determined as per standard test methods in the standard atmosphere.

It was observed that the actual counts of the yarn collected from both jute mills varied from their nominal counts. Yarns of 207 tex, 276 tex and 345 tex collected from Karim Jute Mills Ltd. Were heavier and that of 414 tex was lighter than their nominal counts. But all the yarns collected from Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd. Were found lighter than their nominal counts. The twist factor (TF) of 345 tex and 414 tex yarns of both the mills were more than the standard twist factor of their respective counts. Further studies are required to arrive at a definite conclusion and make full interpretation on the results.
