Establish and Standardize Screen Printing Process Technology with Different Classes of Dyestuff (reactive and Pigment Dyestuff )for Jute and Jute Cotton Union Fabric.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted in Yarn and Fabric Production Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 1995 to develop best and economic commercial screen printing process for jute and jute-cotton union fabric. A screen printing method was developed and carried out achieving a composite design containing three colors using pigment dispersion such as Helizarine Red BT conc., Helizarine Turquoise Blue GT conc. And Helizarine Green BT conc. (BASF). 25 meter of Novotex fabric was printed with pigment dyes producing a composite design of three colors. The washing, rubbing and light fastness of the printed fabrics were determined and were found in the rating of 4,5 and 4 respectively as per international standard method and found satisfactory.

Objectives:

1.To develop best and economic commercial screen printing process for jute and Novotex fabric with reactive and pigment dyestuff in pilot scale, and

2.To evaluate the color fastness properties due to washing, exposure to light and rubbing.

Methodology:

Jute-cotton union fabric (60:40), pigment dyes and a composite design consisting of three colours were selected for carrying out the experiment. Prior to printing the fabric, the following sequences of the pretreatment i.e. singeing-scouring-woolenising/mercerizing-bleaching were done. Printing: The print paste was prepared on constant stirring using the following ingredients. 1) Pigment dyes: i. Helizarine Red BT-50g/l ii. Helizarine Turquoise Blue GT conc.-50g/l iii. Helizarine Green BT conc. -50g/l 2) Pigment gum (Alcoprint) -60g/l 3) Luprintol PL -20g/l 4) Helizarine Binder UD -120g/l 5) White spirit -660g/l 6) Ammonium Chloride -30g/l Pigment gum, Luprintol PL and water were mixed together by constant stirring with the help of a high speed stirrer and adding white spirit, then ammonium chloride/ammonium sulphate (1:3), and Helizarine binder UD were added. After that, each pigment dye was mixed separately in the above paste. One color containing the paste was used individually for one screen. Printing was carried out on Novotex fabric using three screens and a squeezer in a printing table. A composite design consisting of three colors was produced. After printing,The fabric was dried and heat-set at 180⁰C for 1 minute. Fastness properties were determined.

Achievement/Findings:

The pigment printing method using flat screen is easy to apply. In our experiment, sharpness, brightness and fastness properties found satisfactory. The products are suitable for decorative and furnishing purposes. This screen printing process requires no mechanical equipment. With regard to labor cost, equipment, easy application and reliability of production, this method is popular. Jute fabrics may be printed on large scale basis applying this method.
