Measurement of Dielectric Properties of Jute and Jute Materials in Comparison to Cotton, Wool and Synthetic .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted in Jute Waste Utilization Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 1995 to measure of dielectric constant and electrical resistance of jute/ jute materials. Dielectric constant K (W), electrical resistance RP and capacitance were studied for a natural and a bleached jute sample. The natural jute has shown better insulating properties than those of treated jute.It was also found that the electrical resistance and the dielectric constant of natural jute were higher than these of bleached (treated) jute powder. So, the natural jute has better insulating properties than that of delignified /treated jute materials.

Objectives:

To measure dielectric constant and electrical resistance of jute and jute blended materials.

Methodology:

The measurement of the real part of Dielectric Constant K (W) was performed by measuring the capacitance of a Capacitor when it was filled with jute powder at a constant pressure. The capacity of the empty capacitor was measured. Thus, the Dielectric Constant was calculated. Shearing bridge was used to measure these parameters and the schematic diagram of the bridge represents the equivalent circuit of the bridge. Powder samples were made from bleached and natural jute separately and the measurements were done at room temperatures of 19⁰C, 22⁰C, 28⁰C and 30⁰C when the humidity was not controlled.

Achievement/Findings:

Measurement of dielectric properties of jute and jute materials is an important factor in assessing health hazard properties of jute and jute blended products. A few readings within a short range of temperature have been included for a sample of bleached and natural jute powder. But the degree of delignification of the bleached sample was unknown. Measurement of parallel capacitance and dielectric constant was by using Shearing bridge and the measurement of parallel resistance and conductance were done by using Mega-ohm meter. The measurement showed that the capacitance as well as the dielectric constant K (W) increased with the increase in temperature for both natural and bleached materials. The measurement of electrical resistance showed that the value of parallel resistance, RP decreased and conductance increased with the increase of a-c frequency. It was also found that the electrical resistance and the dielectric constant of natural jute were higher than these of bleached (treated) jute powder. So, the natural jute has better insulating properties than that of delignified treated jute materials.
