The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Yarn and Fabric Production Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1995. The physical properties of the constituent yarns of the 100% jute and jute/acrylic (80:20)blended blankets were determined. Thus count, twist, Tensile strength and quality ratio of the yarns were measured. The physical properties of Novocel 100% jute and Novotex blended blankets were also measured. Thus wt. per sq. meter, breaking strength, thickness, abrasion resistance, bursting strength, thermal conductivity and moisture regain (1%) were determined. The warp-wise tensile strength was thus lower compared to weft-wise tensile strength.Breaking strength in warp and weft directions of 100% jute blankets were 67.29 kg and 21.07 kg and for blended blankets were 16.52 kg and 127.91 kg respectively. The thickness of blankets measured by a thickness gauge was 3.11 mm and 3.82 mm for 100% jute and jute/acrylic blended blanket respectively. Moisture Regain (%) of the 100% jute blanket was found more than that of the Novotex (blended) blanket, which are 9.09% and 7.53% respectively. The above results would be helpful for the improvement of different kinds of blankets as well as in standardizing blankets of 100% jute and of blends.

To produce jute blanket with required performance.

Two types of blankets were taken from the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute sales center which were manufactured at the Weaving Department. They are:i) Novocel blankets (100% jute), (ii) Novotex blanket (warp cotton yarn, weft jute/acrylic 80:20 blended yarn). A batch of good quality jute fibre was taken and spun into yarn and plied. Another batch of jute and acrylic in the ratio of 80:20 were blended and was spun into the yarn and plied. The plied yarns were then chemically modified, bleached, dyed and finished. In 100% jute blanket, novocel yarns were used both as warp and weft. In the case of blended blanket, blended plied yarn was used as weft with cotton yarn as the warp for producing blanket fabric by simple loom. The woven fabric was then passed through the raising machine to acquire its typical fleecy look and soft feel. The physical properties of the warp and weft yarns of 100%jute blanket and blended blankets were determined. Thus, count in tex and lbs/spy, twist per meter, tensile strength and quality ratio of the above mentioned yarns as determined. The physical properties of two types of blankets were also studied.

In 100% jute Novocel blanket, Novocel yarn of 509 tex was used as warp and weft. In the case of blended Novotex blanket, blended plied yarn (jute/acrylic 80:20) of 523 tex was used as weft with 59 tex (20 count/2) cotton yarn as the warp. The physical properties of yarn play a very important role in the manufacturing, as well as, in determining the performance of blanket. The mean values of count, twist per meter, tensile strength, quality ratio of warp and weft yarn of 100% jute blanket, which are 509 tex, 145 twist per meter, 3.1kg and 46.31% respectively. In the case of blended blanket, warp yarn is 100% cotton and weft yarn is jute/acrylic (80:20). It was observed that the mean values of count, twist, tensile strength, quality ratio of warp and weft yarns of Novotex blanket are 59 tex, 685 twist per meter, 0.771 kg, 99.26% and 523 tex, 134 twist per meter, 3.776 kg, 54.70% respectively. The warp-wise tensile strength was thus lower compared to weft-wise tensile strength. Breaking strength in warp and weft directions of 100% jute blankets were 67.29 kg and 21.07 kg and for blended blankets were 16.52 kg and 127.91 kg respectively. The thickness of blankets measured by a thickness gauge was 3.11 mm and 3.82 mm for 100% jute and jute/acrylic blended blanket respectively. It is a well known fact that blankets with high abrasion resistance correspond to high durability.
