Effect of Nutrient Management on Potato Grade and Crude Protein Content of Each Component Crop of Potato-mungbean-t. Aman Rice Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at RWRC of BARI Joydebpur Gazipur, Bangladesh for 2 consecutive years during 2006-07 and 2007-08. The objective was to find out the optimum nutrient management practice on potato grade and protein content of each component crop of potato-mungbean-T. Aman rice cropping pattern. Twelve nutrient management treatments were tested in RCBD with 3 replications. Treatments were T₁=HYG (0-198-44-194-24-6-1.2), T₂=MYG (0-140-34-138-18-4.5-0.9), T3=IPNS (10000-168-38-170-18-6-1.2), T4=STB (0-171-40-164-22-5-1), T₅=FP (0-97-16-91-0-0-0), T₆=CON (0-0-0-0-0-0-0), T₇=HYG+CRI, T₈=MYG+CRI, T₉=IPNS+CRI, T₁₀=STB+CRI, T₁₁=FP+CRI, T₁₂=CON+CRI kg ha-1 CDNPKSZnB, for potato; T1=HYG (0-24-40-48-24-3-1.2), T₂=MYG (0-20-36-40-20-2-1), T₃=IPNS (5000-9-37-36-21-3-1.2), T₄=STB (0-20-36-40-22-2-1), T5=FP (0-6-5-4-0-0-0), T6=CON (0-0-0-0-0-0-0), T7=HYG+CRI , T₈=MYG+CRI, T₉=IPNS+CRI, T₁₀=STB+CRI, T₁₁=FP+CRI, T₁₂=CON+CRI kg ha^-1 CDNPKSZnB for mungbean and T₁=HYG (0-80-16-44-12-2-0), T₂=MYG (0-56-12-32-8-1.5-0), T₃=IPNS (5000-65-13-32-9-2-0), T₄=STB (0-68-15-37-11-2-0), T₅=FP (0-39-37-12-0-0-0), T₆=CON (0-0-0-0-0-0-0), T₇=HYG+CRI, T₈=MYG+CRI, T₉=IPNS+CRI, T₁₀=STB+CRI,T₁₁=FP+CRI, T₁₂=CON+CRI kg ha^-1 CDNPKSZnB for T. Aman rice. Grade of potato tuber, protein content of potato tuber, mungbean seed and rice grain were significantly influenced by different nutrient management practices in both the years. The maximum number of small size potato tuber (<28 mm) was produced in control treatments. Except control treatment without CRI, remaining treatments gave more or less similar protein content in potato tuber, mungbean seed and rice grain in both the years.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum nutrient management practice for potato tuber grade and crude protein content of each component crop of potato-mungbean-T. Aman rice cropping pattern.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the RWRC of BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur. The experimental field of Gazipur belongs to the agro-ecological zone of Modhupur Tract (AEZ-28). Potato (BARI-alu 8, Cardinal), mungbean (BARI mung 6) and T. Aman rice (BRRI dhan39) varieties were tested in Rabi, Kharif-I and Kharif-2 seasons, respectively for 2006-07 and 2007-08. Twelve nutrient management treatments were tested in RCBD with 3 replications. Aman rice. Here HYG= High Yield Goal, MYG= Moderate Yield Goal, IPNS= Integrated Nutrient Management System, STB= Soil Test Base, FP= Farmers Practice, CON= Control, CD= Cowdung and CRI= Crop Residue Incorporated. Grading of potato tuber in percentage by number and by weight was done by using the potato grader. The grader sizes were <28 mm, 28-<45 mm, 45-<55 mm and >55 mm. Protein (%) of potato tuber, mungbean seed and rice grain was calculated. The conversion factor was 6.25 for both potato tuber and mungbean seed and 5.95 for rice grain (Woolfe, 1987). Protein (%) was calculated by following formula. Protein (%) = N (%) x factor for given sample. The data were analyzed statistically by the F-test to examine whether the treatment effects were significant. The mean comparisons of the treatments were evaluated by DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test).

Achievement/Findings:

Protein content of potato tuber, mungbean seed and rice grain of T. Aman rice was significantly influenced by different nutrient management treatments along with or without crop residues incorporation. Especially, the nutrient element nitrogen plays a vital role regarding the concentration of total nitrogen as well as the protein content in percentage of potato tuber, mungbean seed and rice grain. Nevertheless, other nutrient elements like P, K, S, Zn, B and CRI might have positive effect on protein content.
