Adaptation, Seed Quality Evaluation and Performance of Different Advanced Lines of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

From the storage trial with different containers it was proved that polythene bags and plastic containers in airtight condition were better for storing lentil seed under ambient environment up to eight months. Lentil seed can be stored safely when treated with 5GY – 15GY gamma irradiation. Seeds produced from advanced lines ILL 4605, ILL 8618, ILL 9935, ILL 9945 and ILL 9949 were identified as good for ten months storage when treated with gamma irradiation. The adaptation trials at three different locations were conducted at BARI Central Farm, Joydebpur and the Regional Agricultural Research Stations of Jamalpur and Ishurdi from November 2006 to March 2007.The second adaptation trial based on the seeds selected from the previous year trials were conducted at Joydebpur, Jessore and Ishurdi in November 2007-March 2008 The advance lines ILL 7979, ILL 7980, ILL 9927 and ILL 8618 were found to give better yield at Jessore location. In Ishurdi, the lines ILL 9926, ILL 9945, ILL 9989 and ILL 9927 were identified to produce better yield than the other lines. The advance lines ILL 4605, ILL 9926, ILL 91517 and ILL 8618 were found to produce better yield at Joydebpur location.

Objectives:

To identify the seed quality and performance of different advanced lines of lentil

Methodology:

Ten experiments were conducted, out of which two were laboratory based on storage trial and rest eight were conducted in the field.Among the eight field trials, one adaptation trial in first year and the seed multiplication trial in the second year were carried out in the field of Seed Technology Division at central farm of BARI, Joydebpur. The storage experiment with the lentil seeds obtained from seed multiplication trial was carried out with different containers in 2005-2006. Another storage trial with lentil seeds treated with different level of irradiation was carried out in the same year. Both the storage experiments were conducted at the laboratory of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur.

Achievement/Findings:

The developed advance lines may be introduced as new variety in our country after following the necessary formalities. More over those promising lines can be used as breeding materials in the varietal development programme of lentil. The polythene bag or plastic container in airtight condition was found to be suitable for safe storage of lentil seed at home storage under ambient condition. From the study of storage trial of lentil seed irradiated by Gamma ray was found effective for storage. Irradiation level 5GY to 15 GY may be used for lentil seed storage maintains viability and vigour at standard level.The advanced lines of lentil ILL 6024, ILL 9935, ILL 9945, ILL 9995, ILL 91517 were stored safely up to 10 months under ambient conditions. So these lines are useful to develop variety of long time storability.
