Determination of Physical Properties and Construction of Jute Furnishing Fabrics

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance characteristics of four Novotex furnishing fabrics(Plain weave, 3/1 twill, 2/2 twill, Diamond weave) have been determined. The investigation showed that the performance behavior of Novotex furnishing fabrics made from jute and cotton. The breaking loads both warp way and weft way, and bursting strength for each of the furnishing fabrics seen to be acceptable. Bending length and flexural rigidity values of the fabrics were less compared to the nylon upholstery fabric. The performance characteristics of the upholstery furnishing fabrics were softer and more comfortable. For application as upholsteries and curtains furnishing fabrics require some improvement with respect to abrasion, and flexibility in weft way.

Objectives:

To measure the physical characteristics of jute fabrics having different warp and weft constructions and relate these to the characteristics of the yarns used.

Methodology:

Furnishing Fabrics were conventional made with cotton, wool and synthetic fibers. But through technological breakthrough, BJRI(Tech) was going to use jute fibers as the materials for furnishing fabrics in combination with cotton and man-made fibers. Some products had been developed for use as upholstery fabrics, certains and draperies. With this objective the following fabrics have been considered for investigation. A. Novotex Fabric, Plain (printed) B. Novotex Fabric, 3/1 twill (green color) C. Novotex Fabric, 2/2 twill (orange color) D. Novotex Fabric, Diamond (red color) Breaking Tenacity and breaking elongation of yarns taken from the fabrics under investigation have been determined by Universal Testing Machine INSTRON, Capacity 100 kg. Yarns per inch both warpway and weftway were determined for each test samples. Besides these other properties such as Bursting strength, Stiffness of fabrics and Abrasion Resistance were determined.

The performance characteristics of four Novotex furnishing fabrics have been determined. From the data it was observed that these fabrics were of different constructions, different ends and picks, different counts. So they were not compared among themselves regards to their performance characteristics. However, breaking loads both warp way and weft way, and bursting strength for each of the furnishing fabrics seen to be acceptable. Bending length and flexural rigidity values of the fabrics were less compared to the nylon upholstery fabric. Considering the abrasion resistances for Novotex fabrics- Plain weave, 3/1 twill, 2/2 twill, Diamond weave were 2600, 7444, 4863, 920 those were below than upholstery fabrics. The performance characteristics of the upholstery furnishing fabrics manufactured from jute and cotton revealed that these fabrics were softer and more comfortable. But the abrasion resistance is not quite satisfactory and therefore, they were less durable.
