Development of Ipm Packages for Insect Pests of Country Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Numbers of healthy and infested flowers were counted and recorded from randomly selected 50 rachis and during each harvest the number and weight of healthy and infested fruits were counted and recorded. Counting and recording of healthy and infested inflorescence from 50 randomly selected inflorescence per treatment replicate also determined aphid infestation. The percent flower, pod infestation by borer and inflorescence infestation by aphids were calculated from the recorded data. Studies were undertaken at research field of BARI, Gazipur to evaluate the IPM package comprised of hand picking and innundative release of parasitoids during 2008-09 and 2009-10 cropping seasons. Both the year, percent flower infestation and pod infestation by borer complex was significantly less in the IPM plots than the sprayed plots. Borer infestation in flower was about 3.99 and in pod 6.20 times less during 2008-09 and 6.65 and 18.14 times less during 2009-10 in IPM plots than the spray plots. While aphid infestation was 5.74 times in 2008-09 and 7.76 time in 2009-20 higher in non-IPM plots than the IPM plots. During both season, the yield of country bean was significantly higher in the IPM plots than the non-IPM plots (1.81 times higher during 2008-09 and 1.76 times higher during 2009-10).

Objectives:

To develop sustainable management packages to control insect pests in country bean

Methodology:

This study was done at the research field of BARI, Gazipur during from September 2008 to March 2009 and September 2009 to March 2010 cropping season. The unit plot size was 20 x 20m and a distance of 200 m2 was maintained between the IPM and Non-IPM plots. There were three dispersed replications and the experiment was set in RCB design. There were three treatments: 1) IPM trials comprises of hand picking of infested flowers and fruits at alternate days and weekly release of egg parasitoid, Tricogramma evanescence (@ 1 gm parasitised eggs/ha/week) and larval parasitoid Bracon hebetor (800-1000 adult /ha/week) and spraying of soap water (5 gam/liter of water) during initial aphid infestation, 2) only weekly release of bio-control agents, as described in the treatment 1, 3) Farmers’ practice – spraying of synthetic parathyroid insecticide (Cymbush 10 EC @ 1 ml/liter of water) at every three days interval.

Achievement/Findings:

IPM Package comprising of hand picking of infested flowers and fruits and weekly release of egg parasitoid, Tricogramma evanescence and larval parasitoid Bracon hebetor and spraying of soap water (during initial aphid infestation) can be recommended to farmers for managing insect pests of country bean.
