Quantification of Percent Parasitism of Natural Enemies on Artificially Released Bsfb Eggs Under Field Condition in Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted both in field and laboratory condition for quantification of percent parasitism of natural enemies on artificially released BSFB eggs at Horticulture Research Centre, BARI during January to May 2010. The average parasitism percent was recorded (3.03-5.39%) during the study period. The highest percent parasitism (5.39%) was observed when BSFB eggs were exposed for 24 hours compared to 4.56% for 18 hours and 3.13% for 12 hours exposure. Parasitism rate increased gradually with the increase of temperature and relative humidity.

Objectives:

To strengthen and promote the biological activity in insect pest management

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in both field and laboratory of the Horticulture Research Centre of BARI during January to May 2010. All the four treatments were set at the three separate brinjal plots at HRC research farm. Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) eggs were collected by rearing BSFB colony in the laboratory of Entomology section. For rearing, infested shoot and fruit of brinjal were collected regularly from field into the rearing cases. Eggs laid by females were collected and released (with pre-counted BSFB egg strips) on the lower leaf surface of the upper brinjal leaves. The egg mass strips were allowed to infect by natural enemies for 12, 18, 24 and 36 hours and then the strips were collected and reared into the plastic boyum in the laboratory. The number of parasitized eggs and any natural enemies emerged were counted after emergence.

Achievement/Findings:

Parasitism occurred in natural population as well as in artificially released BSFB eggs although the rate of parasitism is low. The parasitism rate increased with the increase of temperature and relative humidity.
