Production of M2 Seeds and Evaluation of M2 Bulbs of BARI Piaj-2 and BARI Piaj-3.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To produce M₂ seeds and evaluate the M₂ bulbs, the sprouted seeds of BARipiaj-2 were sown in steel tray and transplanted after 54 days on October 2008. Data on different types of mutations were recorded at vegetative and reproductive stages. Apart from these, plant height was recorded from randomly selected 10 competitive plants after 48 DAT while plant progenies with fertile seeds were recorded during seed harvest. Reactions to onion leaf blotch and stemphylum blight diseases of the progenies were assessed visually as disease free (DF) and diseased (D). Finally, the data were subjected to proper statistical analysis. Most of the plants of the M₂ progenies of BARIpiaj-2 produced fertile seeds ranged 0.0 to 84.00% even under the prevailing foggy weather condition during flowering to seed setting stages. In contrast, the mother variety BARIpiaj-2 had only 04.70% plants with fertile seeds. Avery few plant progenies showed disease reaction to leaf blotch and stem phylum blotch diseases. The M₂ progenies from both the varieties that produced sufficient fertile seeds will be divided equally for evaluating the bulb yield potential during ongoing summer season of 2009 and M3 seed production in the next winter season.

Objectives:

To assess variability in M₂ generation for seed yield potential , short duration and resistant/tolerant to leaf blotch and stem phylum diseases.

Methodology:

This experiment performed with 30 M2 progenies of BARipiaj-2, derived from irradiating the seeds of with 75 Gy, 100 Gy and 125 Gy together with both mother variety, during October 2008 to April 2009 at BINA Sub-station farm, Ishurdi in plant –progeny-rows. The seeds were first sprouted and sown in steel tray on 23.10.2008 and transplanted after 54 days at 15 cm distance within rows of 20 cm apart in raised bed. The experimental area comprised 3 blocks with 13, 10 and 7 progenies and 5, 4 and 3 plots for the mother variety, BARipiaj-2, respectively. Recommended doses of manures and fertilizers, cultural and intercultural operations were followed as and when necessitated. Recommended doses of manures and fertilizers were applied together with cultural and intercultural operations. Data on different types of mutations were recorded at vegetative and reproductive stages. Apart from these, plant height was recorded from randomly selected 10 competitive plants after 48 DAT while plants with fertile seeds were recorded during seed harvest. Achievement/Findings:

Of 30 M₂ progenies, 19 had significantly taller and only 11 had shorter height than the mother variety, BARIpiaj-2. Nineteen of the progenies had significantly shorter days to first flower bud appearance while longer in only 3. In contrast, days to first flower opening took significantly shorter period in 18 and longer in 8 of the progenies. Both these two characters, mentioned above, are indicators of early maturity in onion. Most of the plants of the M₂ progenies had sufficient fertile seed ranged 0.0 to 84.00% even under the prevailing foggy weather condition during flowering to seed setting stages. In contrast, the mother variety BARIpiaj-2 had only 04.70% plants with fertile seeds. Only 3 progenies of BARIpiaj-2 had no symptoms while the remainders showed symptoms of onion leaf and stemphylum blotch diseases.
