Survey and Monitoring of Natural Enemies of Leaf Miner in Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Survey and monitoring of natural enemies of tomato leaf miner was conducted in the research field and laboratory of the Entomology Section of the Horticultural Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur Gazipur during January to March 2010 cropping seasons. Four tomato varieties BARI Tomato-2 (Raton), BARI Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-9 (Lalima) and BARI Tomato-14 were planted. Leaf miner infestation ranged from (31.75 to 82.54%) among the varieties across the cropping season. Leaf miner infestation was increased with the progress of season. Indeterminate variety received the lowest (19.23-28.21%) infestation. Semi-indeterminate type variety received the highest (39.76-82.54%) leaf miner infestation compared to (31.75-77.47%) and (39.68-74.94%) in determinate type. Mean percent parasitism in leaf miner maggot was 12.97 to 32.03%. Two types of hymenopteran’s parasitoids and three types of leaf miner adults (not identified) were observed during the study period.

Objectives:

To identify natural enemy of leaf miner in tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the vegetable research field of Horticultural Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur Gazipur during November to March 2010 cropping seasons. Four tomato varieties BARI Tomato-2 (Raton), BARI Tomato-3, BARI Tomato-9 (Lalima) and BARI Tomato-14 were planted in a RCB design with four replications. The individual plot size was 4 X 3 m² and maintained spacing 60 cm between row and 40 cm between plants. Standard fertilizer dose and all cultural operations were applied as described by Rashid (1993). For encouraging more natural enemies, the crop field was left uninterrupted by any pesticidal intervention during the study period so that the crop was allowed to get natural infestation. Severely infested tomato leaves with leaf miner maggot and pupae were collected from the field and were reared in the plastic boyum covered by 32-mesh nylon net. Adults emerged from pupae were examined under magnifying glass and microscope and leaf miner and any parasitoids emerged were separated, counted and recorded. Percent parasitization was calculated and types of leaf miner parasitoids were noted.

Achievement/Findings:

Three species of hymenopteran’s parasitoids and three species of leaf miner adults (unidentified) were recorded during the study period. Leaf miner population and parasitism rate increased with the following months commenced from January. Indeterminate tomato variety received the lowest leaf miner infestation. On the other hand, semi-indeterminate variety received comparatively higher infestation than determinate type. Parasitism rate increased with the increase of host population (leaf miner). Three leaf miner adults and two hymenopterans parasitoids were visually identified and recorded.
